Our Tucson and Sacramento teams closed out the summer with a little friendly competition outside the office!
Our Tucson team spent an afternoon at Slick City Adventure Park with coworkers and their families taking on the slides, with Connie Jiang and Brian Lubega going head-to-head in a slide race and Connie winning both rounds 🥇 Our Sacramento team headed to Folsom Lake Bowl, for an evening of bowling and pizza with coworkers and families.

We had a fantastic time in Los Angeles at this year’s APA California Conference!

We enjoyed seeing so many new and familiar faces stop by RICK’s booth. It was a pleasure to connect with fellow planners who care so much about their communities and the industry, and with so much change in the profession, it was valuable to come together to discuss what those changes mean for the future of our industry. The conference gave us a chance to learn from each other’s experiences and exchange perspectives on our shared challenges.

We were proud to have Brooke Peterson, AICP, Shannon Baer, AICP, Greg Mattson, AICP, and Sydney Rankmore representing RICK at this year’s conference. Shannon was the moderator for the panel “AI in Action: Tools, Workflows, and Real-World Use Cases Across Disciplines,” while Brooke led two panel sessions, including “Empowering Takeaways for Women Planners,” which drew a packed room and inspiring discussion.

Thank you to everyone who joined us as we continued our RICK Run tradition! It was great to get outside early and see a bit of downtown LA together before heading into Sunday’s sessions.

RICK recently hosted the APWA Young Professionals Pickleball Social, welcoming nearly 50 attendees for an afternoon of friendly competition and networking.

With over 30 players participating, matches were organized by experience level, and no partner was needed! Anyone who signed up solo was paired with another player, making it easy to meet some new people while enjoying some pickleball.

We had a great time hosting everyone and loved seeing such a strong turnout. A special thank you to Kaylin Isbell, Michelle Widelski, Ash Paranthaman, and Joaquin Santos for helping put together such a fun event.

We hope this becomes an annual event and would love to see everyone back on the court next year for the APWA YP Pickleball Social!

RICK Senior Planner Shannon Baer, AICP, joined planning professionals at this year’s APA California Conference to discuss the growing role of AI in the industry.

Shannon was the moderator of the panel “AI in Action: Tools, Workflows, and Real-World Use Cases Across Disciplines,” which explored how AI is being used across the different sectors of planning. The session also discussed lessons learned, opportunities and risk; however, this was just the tip of the iceberg, AI was an unavoidable topic in nearly every session and conversation ranging from submitted site plans to social media deep fakes.

Despite planners becoming more savvy with this technology, Shannon felt more connection than ever to the fellow planners.

“Because we’re all facing this unpredictable time together, there was an extra sense of comradery and vulnerability, with a ‘let’s figure this out together’ mindset.”

Our Arvada team recently had the opportunity to share their knowledge and experience with students at the 5th Annual Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (A.C.E.) Trades Day in Denver, Colorado.

As the only engineering firm represented at the event, RICK hosted four interactive stations where students had the opportunity to get hands-on experience with tools, surveying equipment, safety equipment, and more.

Students got an inside look at the different types of equipment and materials used in engineering and construction, with demonstrations covering everything from heavy machinery and pipe design to field safety and surveying. They also had the chance to work directly with surveying equipment, using a level and 90-degree prism to locate temporary benchmarks.

We’re honored to have been part of this year’s A.C.E. Trades Day and grateful for the opportunity to introduce students to careers in engineering and construction. A special thank you to Michele Gupton and Felisha Martinez for representing RICK and sharing their knowledge with the next generation of industry professionals!

We also appreciate the A.C.E. Trades Day organizers and all the volunteers who helped make this a memorable day for the students. Looking forward to the next one!

The Future Construction Leaders Hard Hat Expo is one event we look forward to every year!

The RICK team brought two demonstrations to the expo, giving students a chance to get hands-on with surveying equipment and also explore how water moves through a community using our EnviroScape watershed model.

Some families have been visiting the RICK booth for years, with one child excited to be returning for the fourth year in a row! Seeing that excitement and curiosity grow each year makes the day that much more rewarding.

For the fifth consecutive year, RICK has earned Platinum recognition through the SANDAG Diamond Awards!

The awards recognize San Diego organizations for their commitment to sustainable transportation and commuter programs. RICK earned the program’s highest level of recognition through our longstanding employee Carpool Program and our continued participation in programs throughout each year, including Bike Anywhere Day, Clean Air Day, and SANDAG-sponsored webinars.

This year 146 organizations throughout the region were recognized through the Diamond Awards, with RICK being one of the 52 receiving Platinum recognition.

Huge congratulations to our team, and thank you to everyone who continues to participate in these programs every year! We’re proud to have supported sustainable commuting for decades and to have received Platinum recognition from SANDAG five years in a row.

We always have the best time attending career fairs and meeting future engineers and industry professionals!

Last week we were out at Cal Poly Pomona’s STEM Career Fair, where RICK’s Abigail Esparza and Dorene White got to chat with so many curious and driven students about where they hope to take their careers and what excites them about the industry. We love getting the chance to talk about what we do at RICK, but even more, we love hearing from students about what they want their own careers to look like.

One year ago today, the County of San Diego proclaimed September 25th, 2025, RICK Day in honor of our 70th anniversary.
