🔘Australia became the first Western country to permit doctors to prescribe M**A for individuals dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder and psilocybin for individuals with depression that is resistant to treatment.
🔘The advancement was possible due to the reclassification of both substances from Schedule 9 of the Poisons Standard to Schedule 8. This reclassification enables their controlled usage under specific circumstances.
🔘Psychiatrists who wish to incorporate M**A or psilocybin into their patients’ treatment must first request authorization, as both substances are still illegal outside of medical contexts. Currently, Australian authorities do not believe there is enough evidence to support the use of psilocybin and M**A over other treatments for various conditions. However, ongoing research on the efficacy of psychedelics to treat different disorders may alter their position in the near future.

🔹New research published in Molecular Psychiatry proposes that administering psychedelics in combination with NMDAR modulators could improve the therapeutic effects and allow for better dose adjustments and safety.
🔹The researchers point out that the therapeutic potential of serotonergic psychedelics, which bind to the 5-HT2A receptor and enhance neuroplasticity could be improved by combining them with NMDAR modulators, tied to synaptic plasticity. They argue that psychedelics’ “psychotomimetic effects”, which essentially means the substance’s capacity to mimic symptoms of psychosis, limit their therapeutic potential. According to the researchers, adding modulators like D-serine and D-cycloserine, which also have neuroplastic and antidepressant effects and modulate neuronal activity in the prefrontal cortex, will enhance the therapeutic effects. Their current focus is on testing this hypothesis for the treatment of depression.

🔘A campaign in California has recently submitted a proposed initiative for the state's 2024 ballot. This initiative aims to establish the TREAT Institute, a dynamic and streamlined organization dedicated to the advancement of treatment, research, education, access, and therapies involving psychedelic medicines. This pioneering institute, would receive $500 million in funding through government agency revenue bonds instead of tax revenue annually to provide grants and loans for psychedelics research.

🔘Instead of proposing decriminalization or legalization directly, its goal is to slowly build a path toward FDA approval by supporting studies on the risks and benefits of psychedelic-assisted therapy for addiction, anxiety, depression, and other disorders. It would also focus on implementing these therapies for first responders and military veterans to generate consensus.
🔘According to the text of the proposed initiative to amend the state Constitution, “The TREAT Institute will not be a typical government agency; it will be an innovative, effective, and lean organization that will provide a consistent, sustainable funding source.”

🔘One of the campaign’s first goals is to raise $11 million to support its campaign costs. After the attorney general writes the ballot title, summary, and question, TREAT California has 180 days to get 874,641 valid signatures from registered voters to qualify for the ballot. Deb Hubers, COO of TREAT, is confident about reaching this number, citing UC Berkeley’s recent study on the public’s perception of psychedelics.

🔘How Might CBD Improve Psychotic Symptoms?
🔘Traditional antipsychotics are thought to work by targeting the release of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, namely noradrenaline, acetylcholine, serotonin, and most notably, dopamine. The dopamine hypothesis, which has dominated psychosis treatment to date, postulates that an excess of dopamine in the brain causes psychotic symptoms.

🔘Antipsychotic medication binds to dopamine receptors, thus reducing dopamine production. However, in some psychotic patients dopamine production is thought to be relatively normal. Exploring the impact of other neurotransmitter systems may therefore lead to new classes of treatment.
🔘A recent study explored the effect of CBD and placebo on treatment-naive individuals at high risk of developing psychosis and compared their brain activation via fMRI during a verbal learning task to un-medicated healthy controls.

🔘Overall, at-risk individuals show lower levels of activation compared to health controls, but those who received CBD show significantly greater brain activation than those who received placebo.
🔘The researchers conclude that CBD could partially normalize alterations to brain areas implicated in the development of psychosis.

Moreover, 20% of the participants were in remission three weeks later, meaning they no longer met the clinical criteria for depression.

🔘The results are extremely positive considering traditional antidepressants often struggle to help patients achieve remission, with many still experiencing symptoms even if they have a responds to the treatment.
