This yard had dead grass in the front, dead grass in the back, and a cracked concrete patio.

We replaced the lawn with turf front and back, and swapped the old patio for pavers that run under the pergola and along the house. Out front, paver stepping stones curve through the turf, with river rock edging around the planting bed.

We kept what was already working: their palms, the lemon tree, and the plumeria out front.

Now it stays green all year, and nobody has to mow it.

If your yard had a problem last winter, this one could make it worse. Forecasters say this could be one of the strongest El Niños since 1950, so here are the 7 spots where San Diego yards fail first.

Retaining walls: a lean, new cracks, or no weep holes.

Drains: clogged is the same as none, so run a hose into each one.

Slopes: bare dirt, or soil that slid down last winter.

Side yards: water sitting against the house.

Decks: soil washed out around the footings.

Patios: puddles still there the next day.

Covered spaces: no gutter, so the roof dumps along the edge.

Been putting off your yard because you don't know where to start? So was Yuki.

We started with a brainstorming session and a walkthrough, then worked through design iterations until the plan fit how the family wanted to use the space. From there we built it out: a built-in bench along the planter wall and a raised deck for the dining table.

Now they have a place to hang out TOGETHER!

Is your backyard kid friendly? This one wasn’t.

It was mostly gray concrete and an oversized deck. We took out the concrete and part of the deck, put in grass, and added cable railings so nothing blocks the canyon view.

Now the kids have room to play, and the whole yard feels greener and more open!
