"With the combination of Paragraf and Cardea Bio, we're taking significant leaps forward. Not only will we have a drastically increased bandwidth in terms of graphene-based biosensor production - from thousands to millions per month - but we will also be able to significantly reduce the turnaround time for developing the next generations of BPUs. That's exactly what our partners are requesting, ideally positioning us to better serve the global markets."
- Dr. Kiana Aran, Chief Innovation Officer at Paragraf San Diego

The combination of the two graphene pioneers, as well as Paragraf’s aggressive capacity expansion that will come online later in 2023, enables mass production of a new generation of devices that will deliver real-time analysis in point-of-need tests in the agri-tech, healthcare and environmental monitoring spaces.

Paragraf is the first company in the world to deliver a scalable approach to graphene electronic device manufacturing. At the same time, Cardea Bio is the most advanced in relation to the development of life science applications on graphene-based chips, including the world's first real-time multiomics biosignal detection.

Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) invites Cardea to be part of defining how to integrate biology with electronics

SRC President and CEO, Dr. Todd Younkin, states, “With Cardea, we're seeing a commercial electronics company that are truly the pioneers in biocompatible semiconductors. Their publishing and patent records are unmatched by any other commercial bioelectronics company. The barriers that Dr. Goldsmith's team has met and overcome with the graphene-based biosensors are unique in an area of great interest and future growth. The electronics community, as a whole, will benefit greatly from Cardea sharing their experiences, so we're really excited to have them on board in this project.”

“We’re proud of all the traction we’re seeing with our BPU platform, currently. Everything from having more commercial ‘Powered by Cardea’ applications being developed into products and taken to market, to having all our industry-enabling patents issued, as well as seeing our technology being published in high impact journals. And now being invited to become a part of setting the standards for both graphene in electronics and connecting semiconductors with biology. All of this is truly a statement to our team, our innovations, our experience, and absolutely our leadership as pioneers within graphene biosensors and biocompatible semiconductors", concludes CEO of Cardea, Michael Heltzen.
As part of the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) being selected by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)’s Advanced Manufacturing Office to define the future of Microelectronics and Advanced Packaging Technology (MAPT), Cardea Bio has been invited as a commercial semiconductor company to share their experience with integrating biology with electronics.Full story here: https://eu1.hubs.ly/H01C5bW0

"Cardea is - both in terms of production capacity and quality, as well as IP - the world’s leading company in graphene biosensors. They have a significant capacity to revolutionize medical diagnostics sooner than most people think.”

- says Dr. Kurt Petersen, and continues -

“Cardea’s visionary team has successfully incorporated the many years of knowhow from silicon semiconductor processing and applied this knowledge to graphene-based semiconductors. That may sound trivial, but it’s absolutely not. Not only did they have to overcome the challenges to incorporate new materials and production concepts but think of the very basic idea: They’re measuring the electronic signals from biology in liquids and salts on top of a semiconductor, which would almost instantly render any silicon-based chip useless."

“How do you do electronics with graphene? How should that be approached from a standardization point of view? Specifically, what should the standards be around an electronics grade mono-layer CVD (Chemical V***r Deposition) graphene? Making graphene work reliably is much harder than I think a lot of us understood in the beginning. Standards are important for that and what the Graphene Council is doing, is important for that!" - states Dr. Brett Goldsmith, CTO at Cardea.

In this interview, the Graphene Council and Cardea shares the status on their work in defining the standards for using graphene in electronics and biosensors. The interview is featuring the Executive Director of the Graphene Council, Terrance Barkan, and the Chief Technology Officer at Cardea, Brett Goldsmith, PhD.

Brett Goldsmith, Chief Technology Officer at Cardea, states, "20 years ago we started seeing signs that carbon-based electronics were going to succeed at integrating biology and electronics where existing semiconductors had failed. However, at that time, no one had the technical understanding or experience necessary to create a scalable system concept. This is what we’ve done at Cardea in creating our BPU platform of wetware, nanoware, hardware, and software modules. It’s because of that scalability that I’m immensely proud to say that this year we reached over half a million sensors produced in total and we believe we have the capacity to reach more than one million in 2023."

We totally agree with Design News: Graphene Is Finally Coming to Electronic, Industrial Applications

"Graphene has been hailed as a wonder material for several years now in electronics as well as other areas, including several different types of materials [...] In electronics, most successes to date have been in sensors and optoelectronics. For example Cardea Bio’s graphene biosensors were used in 2021 when Army scientists said they were partnering with DARPA to develop a sensor that can detect airborne SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 disease."

Together with the Gates Foundation, we're thrilled to announce that we'll be developing an electronic nose with the potential to - via breath - rapidly diagnose infectious diseases in developing countries.

“We're obviously very pleased to have received funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and we're even more excited about the prospects of this project. Using our BPU™ Platform to bring novel and feasible diagnosis capabilities to developing countries was a major driver as to why we started Cardea in the first place. Developing an electronic nose with the potential to diagnose diseases like COVID, malaria, cancer, and so on, is literally a dream come true!” states Michael Heltzen, CEO at Cardea Bio.

"Through our scientific papers and commercial partnerships, we have demonstrated that we are the world leader in the graphene bioelectronics and biosensor industry. As we invented the state-of-the-art graphene biosensor designs and many of the fundamental graphene mass manufacturing processes, we’re proud to now have secured multiple international patents needed to commercially make and use our graphene Field Effect Transistors and biosensor technologies. We want to ensure that everybody can get access to these innovations and IP, by being open to licensing our inventions. In addition, we also offer easy commercial access to our BPU platform – a platform that can enable the entire field to move forward and set us all up for future success." - states Brett Goldsmith, PhD, Chief Technology Officer at Cardea.

Cardea’s rapidly expanding IP portfolio now has 28 broad patents issued and another 33 patents pending, cementing Cardea’s market-leader position in the graphene biosensor industry, where they are bringing the BPU™ (Biosignal Processing Unit) Platform to market.

Cardea Bio completes planned launch of CRISPR QC

We're happy to announce a significant milestone with the launch of CRISPR QC Inc. as a separate business using Cardea’s CRISPR-chip™ technology for a range of quality control services for CRISPR gene editing. This milestone is an important move for Cardea Bio on its mission to realizing real-world applications of their BPU™ (Biosignal Processing Unit) Platform.

“One of the challenges for successful CRISPR gene editing is a lack of understanding and standardization of processes around predicting and optimizing CRISPR assay outcomes. At CRISPR QC, we work with scientists to improve the quality of life for all. That's why we're excited to work with the Chief Scientific Officer of Cardea Bio, Dr. Kiana Aran, who recently received NIH funding to help set some of the US quality control standards for CRISPR therapies,” states Ross Bundy, President of CRISPR QC.

“With CRISPR QC going into business with valuable first-of-a-kind services in the growing CRISPR space, we can now showcase a distinct example of what our BPU Platform can enable our partners to do - products and applications otherwise not possible. That in turn drives growth opportunities and revenue for Cardea Bio, unlocking significant value for both CRISPR QC’s and Cardea’s stakeholders,“ says Michael Heltzen, CEO at Cardea Bio.
