Keeping a hospital fully operational while transforming its campus takes careful planning, thoughtful coordination, and design innovation that works behind the scenes.
BWE is providing civil engineering and land surveying services for the comprehensive modernization of Sharp HealthCare's Memorial campus, a multi-phase program totaling 560,000 SF. The program includes rerouted site utilities, a new central energy plant, seismic upgrades to the oldest buildings on campus, a new front entry, demolition of two 8-level patient towers, a 6-level addition to Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns, and a new bridge connection to neighboring Rady Children's Hospital.
One recently completed phase included the design of an underground Permavoid system capable of storing more than 82,000 gallons of stormwater beneath an existing parking lot. The system captures runoff from both minor and major storm events, helping reduce flooding, erosion, and pollutants before they reach downstream waterways. By pairing systems like Permavoid with other stormwater BMPs, we are able to help keep San Diego resilient through everyday rainstorms and the hundred year storms that put this infrastructure to the test.
