SonTek, a Xylem Brand

SonTek, a Xylem Brand SonTek manufactures acoustic Doppler instrumentation for water velocity measurement in oceans, rivers, lakes, canals, harbors, estuaries, and labs.

Our instruments use sound waves to tell you how much, how fast, and in what direction water is moving. Simply put, our instruments use sound waves to tell you how fast water is moving, where it is moving, and even if it is not moving at all. Our customers are scientists, engineers, hydrologists, research associates, water resource planners and anyone that needs to collect velocity (speed) data in

every kind of body of water imaginable. Our products could be as easily found in a university laboratory as they could in the deep ocean, along the coast, or in a river, lake, or stream. From the depths of the Pacific Ocean, to the Amazon River, to the small creek in your backyard, there are SonTek/YSI instruments hard at work every day.

What happens when CastAway-CTD data meets the right AI prompt?

A much faster way to visualize transects, spot mixing or stratification, and create figures that are actually presentation-worthy. This new technical note walks through the process step by step and shows how to move from raw profiles to high-quality cross sections with a lot less effort.

Very practical. Slightly nerdy. Genuinely cool. Download the paper to see it in action!

Could discharge and water-quality data really be collected together from an autonomous surface vehicle on the Mississippi?

If you missed our live webinar—or want to revisit the data—the full recording is now available. Learn how the SonTek-M9 ADCP, Surfbee autonomous platform, and YSI EXO sonde worked together to complete this first-of-its-kind deployment, and explore the workflow, results, and lessons learned from the field.

Watch the recording, download the presentation, and access the attendee Q&A document with expanded responses from our presenters.

SonTek’s CastAway-CTD was the primary instrument used to study river mixing at the Chaktomuk Junction in Phnom Penh, Cambodia—a fascinating confluence-diffluence where the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers meet and then split again. Using conductivity tracing, the study shows how the CastAway-CTD helped reveal changing flow structure, vertical stratification, and water-source movement in this highly dynamic system.

We are also pleased to feature guest contributor Vuthy Chork, Lecturer & Researcher at the Research and Innovation Center, Institute of Technology of Cambodia. One especially interesting detail from the paper: the Tonle Sap River is one of the few rivers in the world that reverses its flow seasonally, making this study area one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic natural mixing zones—and a strong example of how the CastAway-CTD can support meaningful water quality and hydrologic research.

A great field session with Salt River Project staff at two important Arizona locations: the Salt River below Saguaro Lake and the canal below Granite Reef Dam in Mesa.

The training focused on validating, planning, and accounting for water moving through rivers, canals, and streams, along with bathymetric data collection to support dredging near the dam and sediment management in the canals. In a system like SRP’s, that kind of data matters. Granite Reef Diversion Dam directs water from the Salt and Verde rivers into the Arizona and South canals, which help deliver water for irrigation and drinking water across the Phoenix area.

The training was led by Senior Applications Engineer Kevin Labbe and Jessica Latzko, Technical Sales for the region. A practical look at how better visibility into bathymetry and sediment can support smarter maintenance decisions in the field.

A recent field training session at Rio Trancão in Lisbon provided a great opportunity to demonstrate the SonTek-RS5 in operation with the Surfbee autonomous platform.

Led by SonTek Applications Engineer Rob Thomson and supported by Eloy Abascal, European Sales Leader, the session focused on practical ADCP use in a real monitoring environment. Participants included representatives of Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil, I.P. (LNEC) and local sales representative Instru Portugal. The Trancão River connects to the Tagus estuary, making it a fitting setting for hands-on training and field validation work.

A nice example of how autonomous systems, field-proven instrumentation, and local collaboration come together to support confident data collection in real conditions.

What does it take to collect both discharge and water-quality data—autonomously—on a river the size of the Mississippi? In this session, we’ll show how the SonTek-M9, Surfbee - Autonomous Surface Vessels, and YSI, Inc. EXO worked together to make it happen, along with the data and key takeaways from this first-of-its-kind deployment.

The live event takes place on Wednesday, May 6, 9:00 am PDT. Can't make it? Register, and we'll send you a link to the recorded event!

We enjoyed being part of this week’s ALERT Conference in Reno, including the afternoon field trip stop at the Truckee River — Lake Tahoe’s only outlet and a vital river for the region.

Attendees had the chance to see SonTek ADCPs and YSI water quality instrumentation in action through three live demo stations: a Surfbee ASV with a SonTek-M9 collecting discharge data, a YSI EXO sonde collecting water quality data, and an RS5 deployed on a traditional tagline.

Matt Klipfel started the session by sharing background on the Truckee River and the value of precise hydrologic data for regional water management. Thanks to Matt Klipfel, Diego Davis, Dr. Xue Fan, Isaac Jones, and Surfbee’s Evan Leahy for helping make it a great field demonstration.
