SonTek, a Xylem Brand SonTek manufactures acoustic Doppler instrumentation for water velocity measurement in oceans, rivers, lakes, canals, harbors, estuaries, and labs.

Our instruments use sound waves to tell you how much, how fast, and in what direction water is moving. Simply put, our instruments use sound waves to tell you how fast water is moving, where it is moving, and even if it is not moving at all. Our customers are scientists, engineers, hydrologists, research associates, water resource planners and anyone that needs to collect velocity (speed) data in every kind of body of water imaginable. Our products could be as easily found in a university laboratory as they could in the deep ocean, along the coast, or in a river, lake, or stream. From the depths of the Pacific Ocean, to the Amazon River, to the small creek in your backyard, there are SonTek/YSI instruments hard at work every day.

The little RS5 was hard at work on the Piave River near Belluno, Italy.

SonTek Applications Engineer Rob Thomson partnered with our official sales dealer in Italy, Geosphera Hi-Tech Supplies, for a hands-on workshop demonstrating the SonTek-RS5 with the Surfbee FlowSeeker. Together, this technology duo can support both discharge data collection and bathymetric surveys, giving water professionals a practical way to collect strong data from the field.

The Piave River is a dynamic Alpine river system where monitoring flow, sediment, and changing channel conditions plays an important role in water management.

Join us on November 5 in West Sacramento, CA, for the Xylem Environmental Water Workshop, hosted by the California Department of Water Resources.

Registration is limited and expected to fill. If you work in the Central or Northern California region and can attend the full workshop, we encourage you to reserve your spot early.

This one-day workshop is built for water monitoring professionals who already have some familiarity with ADCP use and deployment. We’ll spend the morning covering practical theory around advanced hydrologic monitoring for high-flow and extreme events, then move into afternoon field demonstrations.

It’s always a good field day when Daniel Wagenaar is smiling behind the controls of the Surfbee FlowSeeker.

SonTek was glad to be part of the Australian Hydrographers Association Technical Workshop in Victor Harbor, South Australia. The three-day event brought together hydrographers, government agencies, and technology providers to share ideas, compare methods, and explore new tools for streamflow measurement and monitoring.

A highlight was the field day at Salt Creek, where participants evaluated technologies against an artificial gauging weir, including ADCPs, optical flow systems, and surface radar. Our team showcased the SonTek-M9, SonTek-QC4, and Surfbee FlowSeeker, demonstrating practical solutions for collecting reliable data in real field conditions.

Thank you to the Australian Hydrographers Association and all who participated. We’re always happy to support the people doing the work that keeps water data moving.

Shallow water. Low velocity. Real measurement challenges.

At Longjiaba Hydrological Station in Chongqing, the team worked with the Upper Reaches Bureau, Hydrology Bureau of the Yangtze River Commission to explore how the SonTek-RS5 can support discharge measurements in small rivers, mountain streams, and other low-flow environments.

These are the kinds of sites where traditional methods can be difficult—especially during dry seasons, when discharge may be very low and conditions change quickly. The RS5 gives teams a practical way to collect dependable data and better understand flow behavior in challenging field conditions.

We were happy to welcome 15 water monitoring professionals to SonTek this week for SonTek-RS5 ADCP discharge measurement training.

The group included participants primarily from the California Department of Water Resources, along with the County of Ventura, Rincon Consultants, and West Yost Associates. The training started with classroom instruction on ADCP principles, followed by a tour of our manufacturing facility to see the precision that goes into every instrument.

From there, the group headed to Peñasquitos Creek in Mira Mesa, San Diego, for hands-on field practice with the RS5. Participants worked through practical deployment techniques, including transect setup, discharge measurement, data review, and best practices for collecting reliable hydrologic data.

Thank you to SonTek Applications Engineers Isaac Jones and Xue Fan for leading the training. Education is an important part of how we support the water monitoring community, both locally and around the world.
