ICP-MS acquisition planning should include site readiness well before delivery.

Electrical service, exhaust, gas supply, environmental conditions, cooling requirements, computer and software needs, physical space, service clearance, and the delivery path can all influence installation timing and cost.

Confirming these requirements early helps prevent an instrument purchase from becoming an installation delay.

Follow Conquer Scientific for practical guidance on planning and sourcing pre-owned analytical instrumentation.

Choosing between ICP-MS and ICP-OES should begin with application requirements rather than the platform name alone.

Detection limits, elemental coverage, matrix tolerance, throughput, operating requirements, serviceability, equipment condition, and total cost can all affect which system is the more practical acquisition.

For pre-owned equipment especially, the best choice is the platform that fits the laboratory’s methods, workload, support needs, and budget.

Connect with Conquer Scientific for practical elemental-analysis sourcing support.

🧪 SUNDAY LAB COMIC: “I’m not arguing with the HPLC…”

I’m simply explaining, calmly and professionally, why it is wrong.

The method worked yesterday.
The samples are fine.
The mobile phase is fresh.

Therefore, through the scientific process of elimination, the HPLC is doing this on purpose.

For laboratories that depend on HPLC for critical workflows, downtime planning should be part of equipment planning.

A contingency plan might include service support, spare modules, replacement consumables, secondary instrumentation, or an established sourcing contact familiar with the system configuration.

The appropriate strategy depends on method criticality, sample volume, acceptable downtime, parts availability, and budget.

Planning before a failure occurs can make the response significantly faster when one eventually does.

Save this as a starting point for your HPLC downtime plan.

Purchasing an HPLC system involves more than the instrument stack itself.

Consumables such as tubing, seals, frits, filters, vials, caps, solvents, fittings, and columns all contribute to method readiness and the ongoing cost of operating the system.

Planning for those items before installation can help avoid unnecessary delays and make the true acquisition cost easier to evaluate.

Save this checklist before your next HPLC purchase.

🐾 SUNDAY LAB COMIC: The results are in.

After extensive analysis, rigorous testing, and absolutely questionable sample collection methods, the HPLC has reached a definitive conclusion:

CHEESEBURGER. 🍔

The data doesn’t lie. Unfortunately, neither does the smell.

Tested-working and refurbished HPLC systems can both serve a laboratory well, but they represent different levels of preparation, verification, warranty, and support.

Before comparing pricing, ask what was inspected, what was repaired or replaced, how performance was verified, what warranty is included, and what post-sale support is available.

Understanding the condition standard makes it easier to evaluate whether the lower-cost option or the more comprehensive refurbishment is the better fit for the lab.

Save this before your next pre-owned HPLC comparison.

When comparing HPLC systems, the model number and purchase price only tell part of the story.

Verify exactly what each quote includes: the pump, autosampler, detector, column compartment, degasser if applicable, computer, software, cables, accessories, equipment condition, and available support.

Missing modules or components can materially change both the final acquisition cost and the time required to put the system into service.

Compare complete systems—not just matching model names.
