As we continue through the Line Islands to Millennium atoll on expedition with , we are tracking the fate of following the marine heat wave in 2015/6. This large P zelli coral (with polygon pattern) was dead with encrusting algae in 2017; now it is being overgrown by new corals.

FIELD NOTES: Dr. Stuart Sandin and the team are on another return visit to the Southern Line Islands.
“As we survey the of the Line Islands, the question is “what defines this reef?” Vostok’s reefs are notably diverse and productive, unexpected given the island’s tiny footprint (

Meet Nicole Pedersen! Nicole is a scientist from the team who was recently aboard the second expedition. As a member of the marine assessment team, she conducted benthic photomosaic surveys which includes digitally rendering the 3D models to show coral reef change over time.

"I am continually amazed by the diversity of the coral assemblage here in the Maldives. There certainly are differences in the size structure of corals with some atolls having a lot of small new recruits and others having robust reefs with large, old coral colonies, but on nearly every dive I do my own personal scavenger hunt and can typically find at least one colony of every genus of coral present in the Maldives. We even managed to find colonies of a coral that is now rarely found in the Maldives!"

As we eclipse the one year mark of COVID-19, humans have evolved and adapted to changing environments. Some of it was easy, some of it was hard. Globally, people were faced with challenges and benefits many of us haven’t experienced in our generation. In the context of coral reef ecology, it begs the question; what are corals capable of within their lifetime considering the impacts in their own changing environments? Share your thoughts in the comments. 🤿

Click, click, click, click... The shutters from the two cameras in the rig are released by interval timers. Before each dive the equipment is carefully cleaned, composed and set to specific settings developed for optimal output to construct 3D models. Photographer captured team member Katie Lubarsky swimming the rig on our current expedition in the Maldives with

Hello from SIO! 2020 was a year that brought new challenges and opportunities to science and the world. The team is excited to continue to survey coral reefs using our innovative imaging technology worldwide. With the safety of our colleagues, collaborators, supporters and team members in mind we look forward to continuing this project in the field in 2021! Just keep swimming 🐠

In addition to collecting image data to recreate areas of a reef in 3D, scientists also collect meta data information about each reef study site for metrics on reef health such as measurements, fish counts and observations. This information is used in conjunction with the final visualizations to determine the state of the reef at that moment and over time.
