Our nearest galactic neighbor in stunning detail. 🌌

Captured from a private observatory system installed by Sea West, this image of M31, the Andromeda Galaxy reveals sweeping dust lanes, glowing star clouds, and the immense scale of the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way.

Located over 2.5 million light-years away, Andromeda remains one of the most breathtaking targets in the night sky. Images like this are a reminder of what’s possible when precision instrumentation meets dark skies and a properly integrated observatory system.

The Running Chicken Nebula in all its chaotic beauty. 🌌✨

Captured with a PlaneWave DeltaRho 500, this image of IC 2944 — the Running Chicken Nebula showcases glowing hydrogen clouds and intricate dark dust structures spread across one of the southern sky’s most striking emission regions.

This final image combines 61 red, 38 green, and 42 blue exposures at 300 seconds each for a total integration time of 11 hours and 45 minutes. Stacked and processed to bring out the rich detail and color hidden within this massive nebula complex.

A timeless jewel of the winter sky. ✨🌌

Captured from one of our client observatories, M45 the Pleiades shines with brilliant blue reflection nebulosity surrounding this young open star cluster. Also known as the Seven Sisters, M45 is one of the most recognizable and breathtaking deep-sky objects visible from Earth.

A perfect reminder that some of the brightest objects in the sky still hold incredible detail when viewed through the right equipment.

A ghostly glow in the dark of Cepheus. 🌌

Captured from a private observatory in California, this image reveals VdB 152 — the Wolf’s Cave Nebula, a faint reflection nebula illuminated by a nearby star and surrounded by intricate clouds of cosmic dust. Targets like this require long integrations and pristine skies to bring out the delicate structure hidden within the darkness.

To enhance observatory protection and remote use at the University of Maine, we installed a new AAG CloudWatcher weather station and replaced the aging all-sky camera.

We also added 115V and 208V UPS systems for emergency dome closure, reconfigured software for weather-triggered actions, and sealed the dome to prevent leaks.

Reliable gear means more skies, less downtime.

From outdated to upgraded at the University of Maine Observatory!
Sea West was proud to complete a full retrofit, modernizing both hardware and software to bring this facility up to today’s professional observatory standards.

From new UPS systems and a USB 3.0 extender for control room operations, to optical cleaning and dome sealing, every detail was addressed to improve reliability, performance, and weather resilience.

02/09/2026

Sea West Observatories recently made a service trip to Jackson College to bring their observatory one step closer to full remote functionality. We upgraded the weather station, installed a new refractor alongside their PlaneWave CDK700 for expanded imaging options, and mounted a flat panel calibration screen to the dome interior for fully automated flats.

Optimized, upgraded, and ready for remote research and education.
