Meet Elm: a 900-square-foot, single-story retreat built for two people who wanted a weekend away from everything except each other and their dogs.

With woods on one side and a lake on the other, Elm embraces its natural surroundings, allowing the views to take center stage. It does what a good getaway should: gets out the way of the view.

The layout features his-and-her ensuites at either end, connected by a shared living space, because after more than 50 years of marriage, you’ve earned your own corner of quiet. Outside, a deck offers the perfect spot to watch the sunset and listen as the crickets take over for the evening.

Small, simple, and filled with natural light, Elm is a reminder that a getaway doesn’t need thousands of square feet when nature is already your backyard.

Project Spotlight: Custom Home in collaboration with Vandervort Architects 🏠

From dream to build, more than 20 years in the making.✨
For clients making the move from California to the , this San Juan Islands home began as a plan-book dream in the ’90s and became a striking reality: a minimalist, steel-clad retreat designed by David Vandervort Architects for the Lindal Architects Collaborative, built 1,600 feet up a mountainside with sweeping views of the islands and Cascades.

The design leans into contrast, pairing black steel cladding with warm clear cedar siding. A striking departure from the clients’ more traditional first choice, the final design came to life through close collaboration between architect and client.

The home’s response to its environment extends to the roof, where an innovative low-slope design allows snow to melt and drain efficiently, proof that bold design and site-specific performance don’t have to be a trade-off. Together, these choices create a home shaped by its site, its climate, and the people who live there.

Series 2: Chartreuse 🥝 + Prune 🍠

A little more electric than our usual pairings, but still pulled straight from nature: sun-hit leaves against fruit at its darkest. Nothing about this palette is invented; it’s simply observed closely.

We keep coming back to nature-derived color combinations because there’s something to the idea that our nervous systems respond to them differently than to more artificial combinations. Research on biophilia and restorative environments supports that connection, even if the science around color specifically is still catching up to what we know about nature exposure more broadly.

Chartreuse keeps a space awake, while prune keeps it from tipping into loud territory.

We’d use this pairing wherever a space could use a little more life: an entryway, home office, or walk-in closet—anywhere you want to feel alert rather than settled.

Fifty years of care went into this landscape before we ever set foot on it. Our clients lived on this waterfront site for over five decades and planted every single thing here themselves slowly and intentionally.

Now they’re downsizing into a new home on the same land, so they can age in place surrounded by everything they created. Designing it meant listening to the stewards of this site, navigating a buildable envelope six years in the making, and embracing the panoramic water views and climate.

This is site-responsive architecture: a low-impact, sustainable build that preserves the landscape around it. At Oto Design, we believe in slow, intentional work that listens to people and place—the kind of design no shortcut can produce. We’re approaching groundbreaking!
