Few people have watched geotechnical instrumentation evolve as closely as Patrick Lam, PG, CEG. Over 25 years—from early InSAR development alongside its pioneers to today's machine learning forecasts—Patrick has helped shape how our industry measures and monitors ground conditions on landslides, dams, deep excavations, and urban tunnels. In his latest technical insight, he shares the trends, tools, and future directions he sees for the field.

Are you heading to the happiest place on earth this Friday? Stop by the Disneyland Hotel for the Mobility 21 Summit to meet the Delve Underground team.

Rachel Martin, Gregg Davidson, and Patrick Lam will be on hand at table #87 to talk about how we help Southern California agencies deliver transportation, water, and wastewater infrastructure, from tunnel design through construction.

We look forward to seeing you there!

When a landslide took out part of US-95 in northern Idaho in March 2025, the region's only north-south corridor closed. That left nearby communities facing long detours and put emergency response at risk. Our team started field exploration within 48 hours and began repair design within a week. We then supported construction in real time to address challenging ground conditions and sequencing constraints. The roadway reopened 45 days after the failure was reported.

At the 75th Highway Geology Symposium, Brittany Dayley, CEG, LEG, PG and Malcolm Perkins, PE, will explain how that timeline came together. They'll cover flexible exploration, running field work and design in parallel, and close collaboration between the owner, designer, and contractor.

Delve Underground is heading to for Clean Currents 2026, September 21–25. Stop by booth 803 to meet two of our Energy Market Leads.

Mark Havekost, PE, Principal Engineer and Energy & Mining Market Lead, has spent nearly three decades planning, designing, and building resilient underground infrastructure, including the design and rehabilitation of dams, spillways, inlet and outlet structures, and water conveyance systems for hydropower.

Shawn Spreng, PE, Principal Engineer and Energy & Mining Market Lead (West), brings more than 20 years of tunnel design experience, with deep expertise in reservoir outlet tunnels and a track record of working through FERC and California DSOD requirements from investigation through construction.

If you're modernizing an aging facility, adding capacity, or working through a tough underground problem at a dam or powerhouse, come talk with Mark and Shawn. They’d love to brainstorm with you.

Delve Underground is headed to for the AREMA Annual Conference & Expo, September 13–16. Stop by booth 907 to meet Mark Pinske, Patrick Lam, and Ethan Guzek.

Our rail work spans the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and design through permitting and construction. On the freight side, that means tunnel clearance and repairs, embankment stability, drainage, deep foundations, and retained cuts and fills, often designed to fit within short work windows. On the transit side, it means stations, shafts, tunnels, and cross passages for systems in major urban centers.

If you're working through a tough rail challenge, stop by our booth and connect with our team. We'd like to hear about it.

Join us on Thursday, 10 September, as Delve Underground’s Denis Tepavac, CPEng, RPEV, RPEQ, and Dean Treweek, MIEAust, CPEng, NER, present “Tunnelling Under New York” for the Australian Tunnelling Society’s Victoria chapter.

This hybrid event will explore how Australian design expertise is helping shape two of the largest underground infrastructure projects in one of the world’s most densely populated urban environments.

Denis and Dean will provide an overview of the two projects covering a wide range of topics, including the technical challenges and the differences between Australian and US design practice.

About the speakers:
Denis brings 17 years of tunnelling experience across transportation, water, and wastewater projects. He leads design for the station caverns on Second Avenue Subway Phase 2, a $2 billion extension of the Q line that combines TBM, cut-and-cover, and mined construction beneath one of New York’s busiest corridors.

Dean brings 18 years of experience in tunnel, shaft, and segmental lining design. He leads the tunnelling package for the Manhattan Tunnel Project, where jet grouting, ground freezing, and shield tunnelling are paving the way for the Hudson Tunnel Project.

We are proud to have supported the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District's and its goal to reduce the 4.5 billion gallons of combined sewer overflows released into and its tributaries each year.

The Shoreline Storage Tunnel is nearing completion, and Delve Underground has been part of the project from design through construction. The nearly 2.7-mile tunnel will capture and store those overflows along the Lake Erie shoreline, helping improve water quality in the .
