Dear MASPAN Members,
I would like to share an update regarding the ASPAN Reorganization Proposal and what this potential transition could mean for MASPAN.
ASPAN leadership has been thoughtfully evaluating its current component structure in response to national trends, including declining membership and decreased participation in leadership roles across many states. To guide this work, ASPAN engaged a consulting firm and convened the Enhancing Organizational Capacity (EOC) Strategic Work Team (SWT) to develop recommendations focused on long-term sustainability, governance, and future growth.
The proposal under consideration would transition the current 40 separately incorporated components into 10 Regional Entities. The goal of this regional model is to strengthen member engagement, expand leadership pathways, enhance financial stewardship, and increase access to education and professional development across a broader network of nurses.
If implemented, MASPAN would move from operating as an independently incorporated component to becoming part of a Regional Entity. This shift would involve changes to governance structure, nonprofit financial management, tax-exempt status, and review of our current Articles of Incorporation and related governing documents. While these are significant structural considerations, the intent is to create a more sustainable and collaborative framework that supports components and members well into the future. Additional details will follow as the proposal is finalized.
Currently, Region 4 includes MA, Maine, VT/NH, NJ/Bermuda, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and Pennsylvania. Most of the Region 4 components remain stable and engaged. However, Rhode Island recently dissolved as an incorporated component, and Connecticut is experiencing significant sustainability challenges. These realities reflect broader national trends and reinforce the importance of proactive planning.
Under the proposed model, the new Northeast Region would include MASPAN, VT/NH, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York. This configuration is intended to create a balanced and sustainable regional structure while preserving strong local representation and engagement opportunities.
The proposed timeline includes:
• Phase 1: Detailed Planning (December 2025 – January 2026)
• Phase 2: Component Engagement (February 2026 – April 2026)
• Phase 3: Representative Assembly Meeting (April 2026)
• Phase 4: Implementation (May 2026 – December 2026)
• Phase 5: Consolidation & Stabilization (2027 and beyond)
ASPAN and MASPAN will continue to share detailed communication, including the finalized ASPAN Reorganization Proposal. This document will provide comprehensive information about the proposed structure, governance model, and implementation plan, and will outline what will be presented at the Representative Assembly.
This remains a fluid and evolving process, and transparency is a priority. MASPAN leadership is committed to keeping you informed and representing your voice throughout this transition. Members are encouraged to submit questions or request a member forum directly through the MASPAN website, and we are happy to coordinate additional discussion opportunities as needed.
Thank you for your continued dedication to MASPAN and to perianesthesia nursing.

Warm regards,
Suzanne Russell
MASPAN President
