Anderson Anderson Architecture

Anderson Anderson Architecture News and updates from Anderson Anderson Architecture Anderson Anderson Architecture works on a wide variety of creative projects.

We are architects, urban designers, building contractors and makers of many things large--such as handcrafted modern homes, prefabricated buildings, multi-family housing, schools, galleries, university facilities, site master plans, flood control systems, landscape infrastructure--and many things small--such as drawings, models, prints, furniture, books, museum exhibitions, public art and events.

We are most known for our unique imagination, and for practical construction experience in making things real. Brothers Mark Anderson and Peter Anderson lead the firm, working with a talented team of co-workers and with many close collaborators in other areas of art and design, technology, engineering, construction and fabrication. Most of our projects are in the United States and Asia, and we have also collaborated on projects in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Europe. We are especially interested in culturally and environmentally complex projects requiring innovative design and innovative fabrication and construction technologies. This page and related media posts present snapshots of current projects, current thinking and narrative experimentation. Fuller explanation of projects may appear on our web site and publications. Here we are having fun, experimenting, trying new things, meeting new people, and piquing interest in expanded collaboration and new projects to work on.

With the lower concrete structure cured and ready for our fox island residence, we are now transitioning into the upper timber portion. This phase introduces prefabricated 2x6 DLT (dowel-laminated timber) floor panels — delivering speed of construction, structural strength, enhanced fire resistance, and excellent acoustic performance, all while lowering embodied carbon compared to conventional systems. Stay tuned as this hybrid structure continues to take shape. In collaboration with

Happy New Year, everyone!
Model making is definitely an integral part of our architectural practice, allowing us to explore space, site relationships, structure, construction sequences, and so much more. Today, we’re thrilled to share a fresh model straight out of the workshop!
This unique mass timber cantilever house is designed to hang dramatically off a snowy cliff in Pemberton, BC. To meet the challenges of the environment, the foundation—including a garage and an attached ADU—is constructed with insulated concrete forms (ICF), anchored directly into the bedrock. The main residence is supported by two mass timber (CLT + Glulam) Vierendeel trusses, which cantilever out from the foundation, while two steel moment frames handle lateral forces between the timber trusses.
While the actual construction of this house is well underway in the mountains, our version of construction—model making—is now complete! We hope you enjoy these photos of the model and the craftsmanship behind it. A huge shoutout to our talented model maker, Gene Lee, for bringing this vision to life.

Exciting Updates from Sunnybay House! 🌞🏡 We’re thrilled to share progress on our Sunnybay House project in Gig Harbor, Washington. As some of you know, construction began earlier this year, and we’re currently wrapping up work on the two concrete foundation basements.

This unique home features a stunning mass timber bridge that will connect the two basements, creating dual residences with a creative design. We’re aiming to have everything prepped this winter so we can begin the mass timber construction next spring!

The basements are built using experimental materials and techniques, including Fastfoot, insulated concrete forms, and the Zont bracing system. These cutting-edge methods allow us to reduce material and labor costs while achieving a highly customized design.

Once completed, the two-story basements will be home to a variety of creative spaces, including:
🎨 A printmaking studio
🔥 A glassblowing studio
🌱 A nursery
⚓ A boat-building shop

We’re so excited to bring this vision to life and can’t wait to share more updates in the new year. Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes looks and exciting news!

Back in 2021, the town of Greenville in California was tragically destroyed by the Dixie Fire. Since then, we’ve been deeply committed to projects that help the community rebuild their homes and preserve their cherished memories. One such effort is the restoration of the town’s beloved museum, which was also lost in the fire. The new museum honors the original by maintaining its timeless aesthetic, preserving the history and memories it represents. At the same time, it has been reimagined with resilience and sustainability at its core. Featuring solid nail-laminated timber (NLT) walls, floors, and roof panels, as well as a mass timber frame structure, the building is designed to resist future fires while actively sequestering carbon—helping to reduce greenhouse gases and support a sustainable future. The new museum stands as a tribute to the past and a vision for the future, embodying the enduring spirit of Greenville.

As 2024 comes to a close, we’re excited to share some of our completed projects and works in progress over the next couple of weeks! First up, an unique single-family home on Fox Island, Washington. This design features a highly adaptive mass timber post-and-beam structure paired with light NLT enclosure panels, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. The L-shaped layout is carefully crafted to harmonize with the towering fir trees on site. One arm of the L houses the living and dining areas, along with a cantilevered covered deck that offers breathtaking views of the Puget Sound bay. A south-facing clerestory extends from the post-and-beam framework, welcoming abundant natural light into the home. On the other arm of the L, two engawa-style decks nestle among the trees, offering an immersive experience for both the homeowners and their guests. Stay tuned for more projects in the coming weeks!

A physical study model explaining the structural systems of the house we designed in Pemberton, BC. Miscellaneous model materials have been carefully selected to be able to represent different parts of the system but also give an overall coherent visual appearance. The Concrete basement is made white PLA; Glulam+CLT vierendeel truss in baltic birch panel; The interior CLT floor panels are also made from baltic birch as well, the steel moment frames are dark gray spray paint over the 3d printed parts. The cable system is made with piano wire.

Our project in gig harbor, Washington officially breaks ground this summer. Site clearing is almost complete. The site located in a densely vegetated area, we carefully situated the design so that all the valuable trees can be preserved.
