A fiery end. The Russian Pirs module, attached to the International Space Station since 2001, was jettisoned from the station early this morning to make way for the new Nauka module. It was photographed burning in the upper atmosphere, and small parts of it are expected to safely crash into a remote part of the Pacific Ocean.

On this day in 1969, Apollo 10 lifted off on what would be the final “dress rehearsal” mission ahead of the upcoming Apollo 11 moon landing.
During this mission, astronauts flew as close as 8.4 nautical miles from the surface of the moon, proving that various guidance systems would work on a real moon landing approach. The astronauts returned safely to earth 8 days later.
