Hard hats, curiosity, and future engineers in the making! 🏗️✨

Our team had an inspiring morning joining the ACE Mentor Program LA/OC for a behind-the-scenes tour of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center with students from GALA (Girls Academic Leadership Academy).

A huge thank you to Aram Subramanian for representing Degenkolb and showing the students that even everyday essential buildings like hospitals require the same level of planning, coordination, and technical care as iconic structures. This site visit really brought that lesson to life!

We’re especially grateful to the Harbor project team for making it happen on short notice:
• Austin Milliren, Field Engineer, Hensel Phelps
• Joseph Kazane, Project Engineer, Hensel Phelps
And for their guidance and support from ACE and GALA:
• Anne Ettley, ACE LA/OC Chapter Lead
• Donna Clandening, GALA’s ACE Board Liaison
• Stacey Thomas, GALA Architecture Teacher
This tour also highlighted the power of cross-office teamwork, with our Los Angeles and Orange County teams, namely Phuoc Tran, collaborating to make the visit happen.

Degenkolb has proudly volunteered with ACE for many years, mentoring students and inspiring the next generation of engineers. We encourage colleagues in the region with active project sites to welcome the ACE community to their campuses—there’s nothing like seeing engineering in action to spark a future career!
The ACE Mentor Program of America, founded in 1994, is a no-cost after-school program connecting high school students with design and construction experts. It addresses workforce needs, bridges the skills gap, and offers exciting opportunities from mentorship all the way through full-time employment.

Moments like these are why mentorship matters.

DBIA 2025 brought together some of the best minds in design build, and we were proud to be part of the conversation. John Matuska and John J Raad, PE, representing Ruby+Associates, a Degenkolb Company, and Degenkolb Engineers, joined industry partners from Barton Malow and General Motors to present “Design Build in Motion: General Motors’ Shift to Integrated, Tech Driven Delivery.”

They dug into how collaboration and technology are reshaping industrial projects, sharing lessons on integrated delivery, managing design risk, and leveraging digital coordination tools to keep complex work moving efficiently.

We’re grateful for the chance to share our perspective and connect with leaders who are pushing the future of design build forward. Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA)

Our Southern California summer interns recently had the incredible opportunity to tour the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Replacement Project, led by Degenkolb Associate, Dhawal Desai!🏥🏗️
The tour showcased the ongoing design and construction of a 555,000 SF, nine-story, steel-frame acute care inpatient tower that will house 347 patient beds. Degenkolb’s scope also includes a Facilities and IT Support Building, a Regional Laboratory, and a New Central Plant—all critical components for a state-of-the-art medical campus.
The design-build project is estimated to be done in 2028. Shoutout to our partners for helping us bring this vital project to life: and
Thank you to Dhawal and the project team for giving our interns a first-hand look at this transformative healthcare project!

Reinforced by teamwork — on and off the field. ⚾ Our San Francisco Bay Area company softball team’s season has officially wrapped — and we’re proud to say we stayed structurally sound through every inning!
From “shear” determination at the plate to “moment-resisting” plays in the field, the Degenkolb team — made up of players from our San Francisco and Oakland offices — brought the energy and had a home run of a time.
And the fun didn’t stop there! We also took time this summer to enjoy America’s pastime from the stands at a San Francisco Giants game — another great chance to connect, cheer, and celebrate the season together.
Here’s to a summer of connection, competition, and camaraderie. Until next year!

We’re hitting the small screen! 🎥 Two of our own — Laura Weyl and Bob Pekelnicky — are featured in the episode titled “Ecobuilds & Earthquakes” of the series “How Did They Build That?”, which premiered Sunday, August 24.

This episode explores the story behind one of San Francisco’s most iconic landmarks: the Transamerica Pyramid Center — from its controversial start in 1969 to its stunning 2024 transformation by and . It’s a deep dive into the engineering, design, and vision that reshaped a skyline icon for a new era.

We’re proud that Degenkolb Engineers played a role in this reimagining — and even prouder to see our team share their expertise on screen. 🎬

Catch the episode for a behind-the-scenes look at how groundbreaking structures come to life. 📺

Yesterday, the halls of Degenkolb Engineers and , a Degenkolb Company, were filled with festive spirit as we came together for our in-office holiday celebrations! From creative takes on ugly holiday sweaters to competitive white elephant games, it was a joyful way to wrap up the year. ❄️🎁🎄
It’s extra fitting that today is National Ugly Sweater Day—we’re proudly keeping the tradition alive, spreading holiday cheer (and maybe a little laughter at some of our sweater choices).
Here’s to celebrating the season with warmth, good company, and just the right amount of “ugly.” Wishing everyone a safe, happy, and bright holiday season! ✨

Drop and cover! In honor of Earthquake Preparedness Week, all of our offices participated in the Great Shakeout 2024 earlier today. These annual drills are a great reminder of essential safety practices—like “drop, cover, hold on” and keeping emergency kits up to date. They also give us a chance to test our firmwide readiness for the next big seismic event.

Check out Megan Schroeder and Kaira Campos from our San Diego office, showing off their best “drop and cover” moves during this morning’s drill!

Degenkolb Southern California staff spent this past Saturday showing their support for the UC Irvine Anti-Cancer Challenge! With 9 in-person team members and 5 virtual members, they raised $800 that will go towards funding cancer research.

We are always proud to support this event and are already looking forward to participating again next year!

The Degenkolb team was thrilled to see the San Bruno Recreation and Aquatic Center (RAC) open its doors to the community this weekend in sunny San Bruno, CA! Holly Razzano, Lilian Gonzalez, and Alex Barnes were on hand to celebrate the grand opening.

Replacing an existing and aged swimming pool and gymnasium/recreation center in San Bruno City Park, this new 49,360-square-foot, two-story facility is designed as a central hub for wellness and recreation, featuring a gymnasium, indoor pool, fitness center, and versatile multi-purpose rooms. The RAC offers a safe, resilient space for the community to gather, stay active, and connect, and has already become a vibrant addition to San Bruno.

Thanks to for your collaboration on this new civic landmark!
