The first Alzheimer's blood test is approved by the FDA

This past week the first blood test for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) diagnosis was approved by the US FDA. This landmark breakthrough builds upon 30 years of Alzheimer’s diagnostic testing and opens up a new horizon for early detection and Alzheimer’s prevention. AD diagnostic blood testing is cheaper (about $600 depending on the test) and safer than the alternatives (brain scans with radioactivity or spinal taps), which means it will be accessible to many more people.

In my Substack I discuss I the history of AD diagnostics and the newer prognostic tests that are not yet approved but are available for purchase. I also discuss the practical implications of this testing for staying sharp and preventing or reversing Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias...

Importantly, the new test is for Alzheimer's diagnosis, not risk, and people must have cognitive decline as well to be diagnosed. If we screen the general population with this test, there would be many people who would test positive and not have cognitive decline. Those people do not have Alzheimer's and may never have it in the future...

Not everyone who has amyloid or Tau accumulation goes on to develop Alzheimer’s Disease, in the same way that not everyone with high cholesterol goes on to have a heart attack. Tau accumulation along with amyloid accumulation (another pathological protein) are two risk factors, amongst many, for Alzheimer’s.

Some of these risk factors are known, like genetic factors, age, s*x, and lifestyle factors. Some of them are still being uncovered, which a goal of NeuroAge. No single risk factor is sufficient to cause disease on its own. Rather, it’s an individual’s particular set of risk factors that determines if and when they will develop Alzheimer’s and also which treatments will work best for them.

Omega-3 supplements reverse biological aging clocks (new study)

Steve Horvath and colleagues show that Omega-3s but not Vitamin D or exercise turn back 3 out of 4 epigenetic clocks tested.

A new study from Professor Steve Horvath (Altos Labs) that came out in Nature Aging in February of this year showed that taking Omega-3 supplements turned back multiple methylation-based aging clocks by a few months after taking them for 3 years.

“Clinician-scientist Heike Bischoff-Ferrari and geroscientist Steve Horvath take omega-3 and vitamin D supplements every day to prevent ageing-related health issues. “I do this every morning with my coffee,” says Horvath, who is based at biotechnology company Altos Labs in Cambridge, UK. “I practise what we publish.”

Altos Labs is the Jeff Bezos funded anti-aging moonshot startup with multiple institutes around the world.

Today is NeuroAge Therapeutics’s third birthday 🎂 🎉 🎉

What a ride it’s been.

We launched the NeuroAge Test for brain aging, which uses AI to combine brain MRI, cognitive testing, and our proprietary transcriptome brain aging clock to help people track their brain aging and prevent dementia in the future. The NeuroAge Test is now available in clinics and to consumers in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Australia, and Poland (and expanding).

We have begun working on therapeutics for Alzheimer’s that reverse brain aging based on AI insights from our incredible longitudinal dataset. Eventually these will be personalized statins for Alzheimer’s, preventing cognitive decline before it destroys people’s lives and independence.

Our world class team comes with expertise from Buck Institute for Research on Aging, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, One Medical, University of California, Berkeley: Christin Glorioso, Francesco Neri, Persiana Cota, Yuriy Golikov, Sam Lee, Krishna Balagopal, Justin Taylor.
