California Building Summit held in Fresno on April 28th. Andy Pease on behalf of The Central California Rural Regional Energy Network (CCR REN) participated in the summit by hosting an informational table, engaging directly with attendees to share details about its programs and regional impact. CCR REN is a multi-agency initiative serving Central California that provides energy efficiency and electrification programs across residential, commercial, and public sectors, with a strong focus on rural and underserved communities. Its offerings include technical assistance, rebates and incentives, workforce training, and direct-install energy upgrades designed to reduce energy consumption, lower utility costs, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
CCR REN’s presence at the summit reinforced the critical role regional partnerships play in translating statewide climate policies into actionable, community-level solutions. By connecting resources, education, and funding opportunities to those who need them most, CCR REN helps bridge the gap between policy and implementation.

In theory, swapping out a water heater is pretty easy, especially when you exchange like for like. However, replacing electric resistance or gas with heat pump water heaters (HPWH) can lead to a few wrinkles, especially when you have limited space. With the right information and knowledgeable tradespeople, these can be surmounted. Just ask our 103-yr old neighbor!

By now, most of us know that heat pump water heaters are highly efficient, up to four times better than their conventional electric resistance precursors. They are on par with high efficiency on-demand gas units and can cost about the same to operate depending on natural gas prices - providing a key ingredient for any project that is targeting all-electric status. On top of that, they provide cooling and dehumidification for the surrounding spaces, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and many are eligible for a variety of incentives.

Check out our blog article for some lessons learned regarding cost, code requirements, and more!

As the LEED rating system continues to evolve, USGBC has announced the deadline for registering projects under v4 is June 30, 2026. Projects registered by the deadline will have until June 30, 2032 to submit documentation for initial design review.

So what is LEED v5 all about? The short answer is that it builds on existing credits, while adding an emphasis on carbon reduction via the introduction of several new prerequisites. Credits that fall within the “Decarbonization” impact category will now make up 50% of total points available. The rest of the points are allocated equally between “Quality of Life” and “Ecological Conservation and Restoration” impacts.

Check out the article below to learn more about what to expect in LEED v5!

The 2025 California Energy Code is here! Many of the changes are typical code updates, such as increased stringency for building envelopes, expanded solar and battery requirements, and emphasis on all-electric buildings. Additionally, there are some key organizational and language changes that provide clarification and add consistency with other parts of the Building Code.

Check out this blog article written by the In Balance team as part of the 3c-Ren Energy Code Connect Blog that highlights six of those changes!

Back when a barn was a barn, the exemption was more obvious; with so many new uses for a barn-type of building in an agricultural setting, it’s important to review details of energy code exceptions.
