🌟 What it feels like to realize a vision four years in the making! 🌟 This structure is the result of a long, sometimes dramatic, effort that started in 2022. This is where food moves from the field into the community—washed, packed, and prepared for families, schools, and our farm stand. It will allow us to scale production, maintain quality, and actually get more local food into people’s hands. It also allows more space for our education programs to expand—we aren’t washing and packing vegetables in our outdoor classroom anymore!

SINCERE GRATITUDE to our funders for this project: California Department of Food and Agriculture , the folks at AgWest Farm Credit , and the generous individual donors who helped build this new hub for our farm community.

This structure took four years of work and a very dedicated team working through ups and downs and the challenges involved in pulling this off just *days* away from our grant deadline. A huge thanks to the folks that worked on this project:

Rachel Kovesdi at Kovesdi Consulting who donated her time and expertise
Andrew Goodwin and Bryan Shields at Andrew Goodwin Designs
Dan at Hive Engineering
Stacey and Halil at
My team of staff at City Farm SLO

Now, we’re dedicating this pavilion in honor of Steven and Jan Marx as a small token of appreciation for what they have done to make City Farm SLO what it is today. We could not be more grateful for their more than 15 years of commitment to City Farm SLO. .marx

Some projects go beyond the build—and this is one of them.
JW Design & Construction is proud to have completed a small but impactful project for City Farm SLO. This new wash-pack pavilion fills a critical need and will support their daily operations and educational programs for years to come.

City Farm SLO is an incredible nonprofit empowering the next generation of SLO County kids through sustainable agriculture and hands-on learning 🌱

We’re excited to celebrate alongside them at the Grand Opening and 5th Annual Sheep Shearing Shindig on May 9th!
Stop by and see it for yourself at 1221 Calle Joaquin—we hope to see you there!

We’re excited to announce our partnership with HASLO on Monterey Family Apartments, a new development on Monterey Street that will bring 105 affordable housing units to our community.
In addition to housing, the project will include a parking garage and ground-floor commercial space to support local businesses and enhance the neighborhood.
We’re proud to be part of a project that supports families and invests in the future of our community.

Today we recognize the incredible women who are helping build our homes, shape our cities, and strengthen our communities. From project managers and engineers to electricians, carpenters, and heavy equipment operators—women across the construction industry are making a lasting impact every day.

At JW Design & Construction, we’re proud to celebrate and collaborate with women who are helping move the industry forward.

We’re especially excited to be partnering with two amazing women developers on the Tru by Hilton Redlands project. One of them, Tracy, is the founder of SHaD (She Has a Deal)—a fantastic program that provides education, mentorship, and resources to help women become hotel owners and leaders in the hospitality industry.

Programs like SHaD are opening doors and creating new opportunities for women in development and hospitality. We’re proud to be part of projects that help support that momentum.

JW Design is proud to announce the successful completion of Valley Fresh Market in Atascadero, which opened its doors this past October. This ground-up neighborhood grocery store serves as the anchor of a 12-acre mixed-use development and was constructed using durable concrete tilt-up panels designed for long-term performance and efficiency. Our team completed the full grocery store build-out, delivering a modern, fully operational retail environment tailored to meet the needs of the growing community.

Since opening, Valley Fresh Market has quickly become more than just a grocery store. From providing convenient access to fresh food to supporting local jobs and surrounding businesses, the market is an important addition to the area and a place where neighbors can gather and connect. We’re grateful to have played a role in bringing another lasting destination to the Central Coast and are proud to see the space thriving.

Our team is committed to maintaining the highest safety standards on every job site. Many of our employees have completed OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 training, and all are CPR-certified, ensuring they’re prepared to respond when it matters most.

We take pride in providing job-specific PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) that aligns with each scope of work—from hard hats and high-vis vests on demolition and site work, to fall protection and eye/ear safety for elevated or high-risk tasks.

Construction is a team effort, and safety is everyone’s responsibility. Through regular training and a proactive approach, we make sure every member of our crew goes home safe—every day.

Hot Weather Means Extra Focus on Jobsite Safety

At J.W. Design & Construction, protecting our teams during extreme heat is a top priority.
Here are our top hot weather safety tips:
• Drink water consistently throughout the day
• Take regular shaded or cool breaks
• Wear light, breathable, light-colored clothing
• Schedule heavy work earlier in the day when possible
• Be alert for heat-related illness
• Heat acclimatization

Know the signs:
• Heat Exhaustion: Heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, weakness, headache
• Heat Stroke: High body temperature, confusion, dry or hot skin, unconsciousness

If you notice these symptoms, take immediate action. Safety always comes first on every jobsite.

JW Design hit the greens for a great cause!

We were proud to sponsor hole #2 at the Austin Hope Charity Golf Tournament, hosted by Hope Family Wines and Must! Charities. This amazing event raises funds to support local causes through Must! Charities—and we’re always here for a little friendly competition when it’s for the greater good.

Our crew of four definitely brought their A-game (and plenty of laughs) to the course. Great golf, great company, and an even greater cause—we’re already looking forward to next year!
