🚨BattleBots Pro League Episode 08 - Driver’s Recap 🚨

A big question on the drive team every match is how aggressive to be. Either play passive, stay out of trouble, and wait for a good hit - or come out of the gate applying pressure and never let up.

Against Cobalt we went passive, we knew we out-maneuver them. Their turning authority is slow, so we could react in an instant when we knew where they were headed. It worked, so there was an argument for running it back.

Against Jackpot we went active. The reason was Ace. Jackpot brought a minibot, so we got a taste of our own medicine. A minibot doesn’t have to do damage to beat you - it just has to keep you immobile while the main bot goes to work. Sitting back and letting that happen wasn’t something we wanted to find out about the hard way, so we committed to staying mobile.

Making that type of call pre-match takes a while, and our thoroughness as a drive team is one of our key strengths. Before the match, we went through every interaction we could think of between our bots and theirs and had exhaustive debates about how each instance would typically resolve. We may not be correct 100% of the time with these debates, but the most important thing is that by the time we are in the driver’s box nobody is making it up as they go. We’ll have already fought it out in the pits and know how to respond.
