This is such a great point from the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency regarding the dangers you can encounter AFTER a hurricane or storm leaves your area.

A key part of hurricane preparedness is understanding the dangers that remain well after a storm. This is NOT the time to let your guard down. Nearly half of hurricane fatalities occur after the storm.

Washington EMC is incredibly proud of our Lineman's Rodeo Team. Led by veteran lineman Ricky Hodges, the team was comprised of (from left to right): Trevor Radford, Triston Brantley, Carson Hart and Logan Jones. These guys put in the time to prepare for the competition and delivered this past weekend at the Georgia Lineman's Rodeo.

Held annually the first Saturday in May at Camp John Hope, which is just south of Fort Valley, this competition highlights the strengths and know-how of many of the brave lineman in the state. The Georgia Lineman’s Rodeo Association (GLRA) is a non-profit organization that conducts the rodeo to maintain a focus on safety, training, and safe work practices in the electric utility industry.

The day started with a little rain, but couldn't dampen the spirits of competitors and spectators alike. Check out these photos and enjoy many of the sights from this year's competition.

With National Hurricane Preparedness Week upon us, we're going to be passing along some great information that comes directly from our Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency partners. Your local, county or area Emergency Management agency is also a great source to follow before and during the Atlantic Hurricane Season which runs from June 1 through November 30 each year.

Do you know your risk? This is National Hurricane Preparedness Week and all week we'll be sharing tips for how to prepare for tropical storms, regardless of where you live. Since the impacts from wind and water can be felt hundreds of miles inland, it's important for everyone to get involved.

Find out now if you live in an area prone to flooding, if you live in an evacuation zone, and identify any structural weaknesses in your home. For more information, visit https://www.noaa.gov/know-your-risk-water-wind

If you haven't already, don't forget to follow the page for more tips and information as we progress into hurricane season.

In May, we recognize National Electrical Safety Month to raise awareness about reducing electrically related fires, injuries and fatalities. Here are a few important safety tips to keep in mind:

· Never use electrical equipment near water.

· Check all light bulbs to ensure the wattage is safe and suitable for the fixture.

· Extension cords are for temporary use only; never run them under rugs, through walls or across doorways.

· Do not plug too many devices into a single outlet or power strip.
