We're 30 miles east of Portland, Oregon and easy to find. From Sandy, Oregon, head east to milepost 36. Turn left off of Highway 26 on to the east end of Sleepy Hollow Drive. The road sweeps to the left and you will immediately turn right on East Barlow Trail Road and cross the bridge over the Sandy River. You then take an immediate left just as you cross the bridge and turn on to East Marmot Road. Drive about .2 mile and you will find us on your right.

I just got a Facebook post telling me to contact them to find out where I was to drop my ballot in Washington. The only problem is that I have not lived in Washington since 1978. Tell me, what you think that is all about. I have been voting by mail in Oregon since we were first able to use vote-by-mail.
Vote. I used to say that I did not care who you voted for, but that you voted. I still do not care who you vote for, but I now care how you vote. I still do not care who you vote for, but I do care that you vote for democracy. If you're not going to vote, get off your ass and do it. This is the most important election I have ever cast my vote in.

This is what can happen when an auto driver does something stupid and cuts in front of a large truck. The driver did the right thing in trying to go to the right for an escape route. Where there is a failure on the trucking company and probably the the country's DOT regulations is that the load was not securely fastened. If you look closely, however, the truck appears to be headed for a rollover even if the load had been secured. I see this type of auto driver error often when I'm in my Peterbilt dump truck.

I had heard about Luther Metke about 30 years ago. He was from near the Black Butte-Sisters area. I met the brother of the fellow that did a film on his work building log homes. At the time they did the film, Luther was building a log house for his daughter. The key point to this is that his daughter was 63 years old when he was building her a cabin!! You can order a copy of this documentary from the U of O Knight Library if you want a copy for yourself. Here is link to a low resolution copy of the film on You Tube.

"Luther Metke at 94" is an ethnographic documentary about Luther Metke, who lived in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon from 1907 until his death in 1985 at age...

While we are replacing the sill logs we will also be leveling the floors and putting in four new 26' 8x8's that we milled ourselves to support the floors. The house was built on 16 support piers made of large rocks and boulders found on the site. The floors were supported by the sill logs so as the piers settled, the logs decayed and the roots from the large Douglas-firs were doing their thing, the entire floor was out of level. We have to deal with a floor that is from -2.75" to + 2.25" out of level. We will bring all the floors back to the level of the fireplace hearth which is our only good reference point. It will be a challenge and I know we can do it.
