O’Connell & Associates is pleased to announce that Josh Barker, P.E., has been named Director of Waterproofing & Restoration, expanding his current leadership responsibilities within the firm.

Josh will continue to lead the Structural Engineering Department while also assuming leadership of Waterproofing & Restoration. The expanded role reflects the natural connection between the two disciplines, which frequently work together in evaluating, repairing, protecting, and extending the life of structures.

Over the past year, our Structural Engineering and Waterproofing & Restoration teams have worked increasingly cross-functionally on projects, making this alignment a natural next step. As a structural engineer, Josh brings technical expertise, sound judgment, and a broad understanding of how these complementary disciplines can work together to provide comprehensive solutions for our clients.

Congratulations to Alex London!

We're proud to share that Alex has passed the Professional Engineer exam, and it's now only a matter of time until he is a licensed Professional Engineer in civil engineering.

Anyone who has sat for the PE knows what goes into it — months of preparation on nights and weekends, on top of a full workload. Alex has been with O'Connell & Associates for four years, and watching him grow from a young engineer into a licensed PE has been one of the real pleasures of running this firm.

Giving back is one of the ways we live our core values at O'Connell & Associates.

Last weekend, our team volunteered in Grayton Beach, helping keep one of our community's greatest treasures clean and beautiful. A special thank you to Cole, Pablo, and Connor for leading the effort and to everyone who came out to serve.

If your building has had window or door replacements done recently — or has them coming up — there's a change in Florida law you should know about.

Threshold buildings in Florida must have a licensed Special Inspector for any window or door replacement project. This isn't a recommendation or a local preference — it's a statewide requirement that applies at the permitting stage.

Threshold buildings include all buildings over three stories or 50 feet in height, or an assembly occupancy over 5,000 square feet with an occupant load greater than 500.

What that means practically: if you're a property manager, contractor, or board member planning this kind of work, a Special Inspector needs to be part of the conversation before permits are pulled — not after.

We've been getting a lot of questions about this lately, so if you're not sure whether your project is affected, feel free to reach out. We're happy to talk through it.

Last week O&A had a massively successful company volunteer event wherein we wrote 210 letters of support for the Bailey Brigade, more than double our original goal.

The Bailey Brigade https://www.baileybrigade.org/ is a local organization that provides care bags for patients beginning cancer treatment, started in memory of Scott Bailey, a local builder, husband, and father to our own Cole Bailey and his two brothers.

Based on the number of backpacks delivered in 2025, O&A wrote enough letters of support for all backpacks projected to be delivered in 2026. The Bailey Brigade is unbelievably grateful for all the help and support.
