LightGuard Systems, Inc. Walk this way to safer crosswalks—and more walkable communities! What drives us?

Our federally-approved lighted warning systems help make crosswalks safer environments for pedestrians. Twenty-five years ago, LightGuard Systems® revolutionized pedestrian safety with the development of Smart Crosswalk™—the first crosswalk in-roadway warning light system of its kind. Our passion for saving lives by helping to eliminate pedestrian traffic accidents and fatalities caused by driver

inattention and in limited visibility conditions. Today, Smart Crosswalk™ helps keep pedestrians safer at thousands of crossing locations across the country—creating more walkable and accessible communities, one crosswalk at a time. Our federally-approved Smart Crosswalk™ can be configured to meet the needs of any mid-block, un-signalized, public or private pedestrian crossing. A complete system typically combines amber LED in-roadway warning lights (IRWLs), durable steel or composite base plates, automatic activation bollards, a controller, flashing LED signs, and solar panels (A/C power is available). The applications for Smart Crosswalk™, when configured with flashing LED signs, remote activation devices (RADs), rapid rectangular flashing beacons (RRFBs), include: private facilities, school campuses, parking areas, warehouses, land-side airport crossings, and railroad crossings.

🚴‍♂️ May is National Bicycle Safety Month

Creating safer streets means looking out for everyone who uses them — including cyclists.

Whether commuting, exercising, or riding with family, bicyclists are especially vulnerable at intersections, crossings, and low-visibility roadways. Driver awareness, visibility, and shared responsibility all play an important role in preventing serious incidents.

At LIGHTGUARD SYSTEMS, we believe safer communities start with better visibility and smarter roadway safety solutions.

This month is a reminder to:
✔ Slow down near crossings
✔ Stay alert for cyclists and pedestrians
✔ Put distractions away while driving
✔ Share the road responsibly

Together, we can help create safer streets for every ride.

🚗📵 New Blog Post

Distracted driving doesn’t just affect other drivers — it puts pedestrians at risk, especially at crossings where visibility matters most.

In recognition of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, we’re taking a closer look at how driver distraction impacts pedestrian safety and what communities can do to reduce risk.

🚗📵 April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Distracted driving continues to be one of the leading causes of preventable crashes in the United States.

On average, nine people are killed every day in crashes involving distracted driving.

Distractions can include:
• Texting or phone use
• Eating or drinking
• Adjusting navigation or vehicle controls
• Conversations that take focus away from driving

Even a few seconds of distraction can put drivers, passengers, and pedestrians at risk.

Putting the phone away and staying focused behind the wheel helps protect everyone on the road.

🚸 Advancing Vision Zero starts at the crosswalk.

Communities across the country are working toward Vision Zero — eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

One of the most effective places to start is improving pedestrian crossings, where visibility and driver awareness can make the difference between a safe crossing and a dangerous one.

Upgrading crossings with active warning technology helps:
✔ Increase driver yielding behavior
✔ Improve pedestrian visibility
✔ Reduce risk at uncontrolled crossings

For more than 30 years, LightGuard Systems has helped cities, campuses, hospitals, airports, and private facilities improve pedestrian safety with MUTCD-compliant warning systems designed for real-world roadways.

Because safer crossings help create safer communities.

🚸 𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹.

In 2023:
• 7,314 pedestrians were killed
• 68,244 were injured
• 74% of fatalities happened away from intersections
• 77% occurred at night

Many serious incidents happen where drivers don’t expect pedestrians — midblock crossings and low-light corridors.

Communities across the country are upgrading high-risk crossings with active warning systems that improve visibility and driver awareness.

At LIGHTGUARD, we design MUTCD-compliant in-roadway warning lights and LED-enhanced signage that help cities, campuses, hospitals, airports, and private facilities create safer crossings.
Better visibility. Safer communities.

Pedestrian safety funding is available — and many agencies don’t realize lighted crosswalk systems qualify.

We’ve put together a clear, up-to-date guide outlining current federal and state pedestrian safety grants that can be used to fund illuminated crosswalks, LED-enhanced crossings, and nighttime visibility improvements.

If your community, campus, or facility is working to improve pedestrian safety, this resource explains:
• Which grant programs apply
• How lighted crosswalk systems fit eligibility requirements
• Where to find official funding sources

🎄🛍️ Holiday Shopping Season = Higher Traffic + More Pedestrians 🛑🚶‍♀️

The holidays bring joy, busy parking lots, and crowded crosswalks—but they also bring increased risk for pedestrians, especially after dark. With shorter days, distracted drivers, and shoppers carrying bags (and kids!), pedestrian safety needs extra attention this time of year.

At LightGuard Systems, we believe safer shopping areas protect everyone—families, seniors, retail employees, and drivers alike.

✨ Pedestrian Safety Tips This Holiday Season ✨
✔️ Drivers: Slow down in parking lots and shopping districts—pedestrians may appear unexpectedly
✔️ Pedestrians: Use marked crosswalks, stay visible, and avoid distractions
✔️ Property owners & cities: Invest in high-visibility crosswalk solutions that actively alert drivers when pedestrians are present

🚦 Active warning systems, like illuminated in-roadway lights and pedestrian-activated beacons, have been shown to dramatically improve driver yielding and reduce near-misses—especially during nighttime and high-traffic holiday hours.

Let’s make sure everyone gets home safely this season. 💙
