This one’s a troublemaker.

Native to the Mediterranean and first found in the U.S. in the late 1800s, this winter annual spreads fast, crowds out native plants, and reduces valuable forage for livestock.

👀 Clues to look for:
• Bristly, sharp seed heads
• Grows 6–24 inches tall
• Seeds with tiny hairs and barbs
• High silica content — unpalatable to livestock & wildlife

Once it gets established, it can take over fields, pastures, and disturbed ground quickly.
