It is with profound sadness that the Grand Dames of Aviation honors the passing of one of our own—Wally Funk, Grand Dame #13.
Some people make history.
Others change it forever.
Wally did both.
As one of the legendary Mercury 13, Wally proved that women had the right stuff to become astronauts. Although she was denied the opportunity to fly into space during the Mercury era, she never allowed disappointment to extinguish her dreams.
For nearly sixty years she continued doing what she loved most—flying, teaching, mentoring, advocating for aviation safety, and inspiring countless women to pursue careers in aviation and aerospace.
Then, on July 20, 2021, history came full circle.
Wally boarded Blue Origin’s New Shepard NS-16, the company’s first crewed human spaceflight, finally realizing the dream that had been delayed—but never defeated. At age 82, she became the oldest person ever to travel to space, a record she held until later that year. She remains the oldest woman ever to fly in space. (ABC News)
When we welcomed Wally into the Grand Dames of Aviation, we intentionally designated her as Grand Dame #13 in tribute to the Mercury 13 women whose courage paved the way for future generations.
Wally received her Grand Dame certificate and membership with the same joy and humility that defined her entire life.
She reminded us that perseverance is stronger than disappointment, that passion has no age limit, and that dreams never expire.
Today we mourn her passing, but we celebrate a life that inspired millions.
Her laughter, kindness, adventurous spirit, and unwavering optimism will forever remain part of our Grand Dames family.
Thank you, Wally, for blazing trails that others would follow.
Your legacy will forever soar.
