Rest in peace
James S. Galletta was an American Merchant Marine who was killed in action during World War II.
Historical military and naval logs detail his service and fatal final mission:
The Sinking of the SS Munger T. Ball
The Incident: On May 4, 1942, Galletta was serving as a crewman aboard the SS Munger T. Ball, an American merchant tanker ship.
The Attack: While traveling off the coast of Key West, Florida, the unescorted vessel was spotted, torpedoed, and shelled by the German U-boat U-507.
Casualties: The torpedo hit caused a massive fire, completely engulfing the ship in flames within seconds. Galletta was among the 30 crew members who lost their lives in the attack; only four crew members survived.
