More rain means more work for your sump pump — especially after everything it’s already handled this month.

Before the next round comes through, take a few minutes to make sure your system is ready.

Test the pump by pouring water into the pit and make sure it turns on and drains properly. Check that the discharge line outside isn’t blocked or disconnected, and if you have a battery backup, make sure it still has a charge.
And if your sump pump is running constantly, making unusual noises, or struggling to keep up, don’t wait until there’s water in the basement to have it checked.

Power is finally coming back on for many homes across Northwest Indiana ,but that doesn’t always mean your AC will come back on normally with it.

After a major outage or power surge, you may notice your system isn’t turning on, your thermostat has reset, the breaker keeps tripping, or your AC is running but not cooling properly.

If something doesn’t seem right, don’t keep resetting a breaker that continues to trip. That can be a sign your system needs to be checked.

A lot of people are asking about generator safety right now, so here are 6 important things to keep in mind:

1. Keep it 20 feet from your home
Portable generators should be placed at least 20 feet away from your house, with the exhaust pointed away from doors, windows, and vents.

2.Never run it in a garage
Do not use a generator inside a garage, basement, shed, or any enclosed space — even if the door is open. Carbon monoxide can build up quickly and become dangerous.

3.Check the oil before use
Before starting your generator, make sure the oil level is where it should be. Low oil can cause the unit to shut down or damage the engine.

4.Let it cool before refueling
Never add gasoline while the generator is running or still hot. Turn it off and let it cool first to help prevent fires.

5.Keep it dry
Do not operate a generator in standing water or where it is directly exposed to rain. Moisture can create serious electrical hazards.

6. Never plug it into a wall outlet
Do not backfeed power into your home through an outlet. This is dangerous and can harm utility workers, your home, and your equipment. If you want to power parts of your home, use a properly installed transfer switch or interlock.

Also, make sure your carbon monoxide alarms are working while using a generator.

As power starts coming back on across Northwest Indiana, don’t forget to check your HVAC system.

Storms, outages, power restoration, and debris can all affect your equipment, even if everything seems fine at first.

Homeowners, watch for signs like:

* AC not turning back on
* Warm air
* Breakers repeatedly tripping
* Strange noises or smells
* A system that is struggling to cool

Business owners, be sure to check your rooftop units as well. Severe weather can cause damage that is not always obvious right away.

For safety, do not climb onto the roof yourself to inspect commercial equipment.

If something doesn’t seem right, schedule maintenance or an inspection.
