🌎❄️ COULD A SUPER EL NIÑO DEVELOP BY THIS WINTER? ❄️🌎

There is increasing discussion in the weather world about the potential for a very strong El Niño pattern developing later this year into winter. NOAA has been monitoring warming sea surface temperatures across the equatorial Pacific, and if this trend continues, it could have major impacts on the overall winter pattern across parts of the United States.

The graphic above shows what snowfall anomalies have looked like during some PREVIOUS stronger El Niño winters. While every winter is different and this is NOT an exact forecast, there are definitely some historical trends meteorologists watch closely during stronger El Niño events.

🔶 WHAT THIS IMAGE IS SHOWING:
☀️ Northern tier of the United States:
• Milder temperatures possible
• Less snow than average possible across portions of the Northern Plains, Upper Midwest, and parts of the Northeast

❄️ Southern tier of the United States:
• Cooler and wetter storm track possible
• Increased chances for above-normal snowfall across parts of the Southern Plains, lower elevations of the Southwest, and portions of the Southeast/Appalachians

🌧️ Strong El Niño winters can also increase:
• Heavy rain and flooding threats in parts of California and the South
• A more active southern jet stream
• Larger temperature swings nationwide

⚠️ IMPORTANT:
This is based on historical analogs from previous strong El Niño events — not a locked-in forecast for this winter. Exact storm tracks, snowfall totals, and temperature patterns can change significantly over the coming months.

NOAA and long-range climate models will continue refining the outlook as we move closer to meteorological winter.
