The CDC has previously warned that the U.S. may see a harsh flu season after few cases were reported over the last two years. A result of reversing pandemic behavioral changes as well as low vaccination rates have now become the primary drivers for this rise. However, Flu season is upon us and the expectation of a surge in COVID cases is at our doorstep. We need to continue our push for the development of NAS150 for treating COVID-19 immediately. New Amsterdam Sciences’ phase 2 candidate, NAS150, is expected to protect from COVID-19 as well as influenza, pneumonia and other infectious diseases.
NAS150 also shows promising results in treating bacterial infections and illness driven by an acute spike in inflammation as a result of an innate heightened immune response. Last month, Vaxart developed an aspirin-sized pill that displayed promising results during a small trial. This tablet utilizes an adenovirus delivery system to deliver instructions for making the COVID spike protein to gut cells, causing a release of antibodies in both the mouth and nose. During the first round of clinical trials, the enhanced antibody levels lasted six months. A phase 2 clinical trial is expected next year.

This past week, completed their phase 2 clinical trials for their rheumatoid arthritis treatment known as peresolimab. Peresolimab is a monoclonal antibody that binds to PD-1 receptors in immune cells, triggering cell death. During the phase 2 trial, the safety and efficacy of the treatment was evaluated using 101 adult participants with moderate to severe RA.

In a recent study on SARS-CoV-2, researchers discovered that decreasing the oral viral load has the potential to substantially reduce transmission of COVID-19. Since SARS-CoV-2 replicates in the salivary glands, scientists have developed a novel treatment, chewing gum tablets containing CTB-ACE2, to debulk pathogens present in the oral cavity. Through experiments, researchers concluded that the enzyme, ACE2, was able to neutralize the virus, causing the levels of viral RNA to be almost undetectable.
