Wild Alaskan Po***ck is a sustainable, mild-flavored, and nutrient-dense whitefish, widely recognized as a top source of lean protein, B-12, and omega-3 fatty acids. Harvested in the Bering Sea, it can be found in fillets, fish fingers, roe, fishmeal, fish oil, and is a key ingredient in surimi (imitation crab).

In 2025, Arctic Storm Management Group began its Food Safety and Quality Employee of the Quarter program to highlight the incredible work our crew does to make our delicious products. The above photos are our most recent FSAQ Employees of the Quarter, Larry and Austin, from Q4 of 2025.

Larry will always be referred to as the Swiss Army Knife of the Arctic Storm. He is always positive and always there and can be counted on to do anything that is required. He is steadfast and task-oriented. Never complains when working in shipyard and is usually supplying what is needed for multiple jobs simultaneously.

This is Austin’s first year with the Arctic Fjord, but he has already shown himself to be a very valuable member of our crew. He works all over the factory and has the attitude and outlook that one needs on board a fishing vessel. He has an incredible work ethic and shows great attention to detail. He is never afraid to speak up when he sees something that may have been overlooked or something that he thinks can be improved upon. During the fall shipyard he has been part of various projects to help improve food safety and quality.

You’ve probably seen big numbers shared online about “bycatch” in Alaska’s trawl fisheries.

But those numbers leave out one important thing: what’s actually being caught.

In the Eastern Bering Sea - where 90 percent of U.S. po***ck comes from - the fishery harvests an average of 2.76 billion pounds of Alaska po***ck each year.

Everything else combined?
64 million pounds – that's 2.3% of total catch.

Within that 2.3% is not one specific species - it’s broken into very different categories, each managed separately by NOAA Fisheries.

Over the next few posts, we’ll break down exactly what’s in those numbers - and what’s not.

Curious how decisions get made in the Alaska po***ck fishery?

The North Pacific Fishery Management Council is one of eight regional councils in the U.S. responsible for sustainably managing federal fisheries. Made up of scientists, stakeholders, and public representatives, the Council sets policy for the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska fisheries.

NPFMC meetings are public, transparent, and grounded in science. And while most - including the current meeting - take place in Alaska, federal law requires at least one meeting each year be held outside the state. All meetings also allow for virtual public participation online.

Good governance is part of what makes the Alaska po***ck fishery one of the most responsibly and sustainably managed in the world.
