The 2023 National Championship Air Races celebrated the illustrious Bardahl Special, an immaculate P-51D Mustang painted in pristine white, steeped in a storied history. Originally in the possession of Chuck Lyford during the 1960s, this Mustang bore the sponsorship of Bardahl lubricants and underwent an extensive transformation. Notably, it incorporated a nitrous oxide injection system and revolutionary cooling innovations. After its retirement from the racing circuit in 1967, the Bardahl Special made a resplendent return in 2022, reaching new heights in 2023 by achieving a remarkable top qualifying speed of 469.935 miles per hour, surpassing all its competitors.
This aircraft's enhancements were more than cosmetic; they assimilated elements from other triumphant Mustang racers, harnessed cutting-edge engine technology, and embraced aerodynamic refinements. What sets the Bardahl Special apart is its remarkable engine, a hybrid masterpiece that hails from the world of hydroplane racing. Drawing inspiration from hydroplane mechanics, this engine utilizes stout Allison engine connecting rods, reinforcing the Merlin powerplant for the rigors of air racing. Furthermore, its supercharger, designed for the later F-82 Twin Mustang, comes equipped with re-sculpted blades for superior performance. The Bardahl Special's engine also features an adjusted angle of incidence, enhancing its speed and efficiency.
These innovations extend beyond the engine; the aircraft's wing flaps rest at a unique angle, adding extra velocity, while aerodynamic refinements were made to eliminate drag. Even the instrument panel was modified for rapid in-flight checks, with the manifold pressure gauge placed upside down for ease of assessment during heated race moments. The Bardahl Special blends classic aesthetics with modern prowess, embodying the visionary aspirations of Chuck Lyford, whose pioneering spirit has contributed to the evolution of ever-more-powerful Mustangs. This remarkable aircraft remains a true legend in the world of air racing.
