This week Nautican Propulsion delivered an 88” diameter High Efficiency Nozzle with pre-swirl stators and headbox to Fred Wahl Marine Construction for installation on the F/V Progress. The Nautican unit is designed to include the Nautican Triple rudders previously installed on the vessel to make a complete Integrated Propulsion Unit. Nautican worked closely with the vessel owners and Hockema Group to support the installation on the vessel.

The vessel will be re-powered with a 2,000 HP Cummins QSK-60 engine matched to a Reintjes WAF 763 gearbox and a Nautican 88” 5-bladed CF3 stainless steel propeller through Wayne C Wingate.

The unit also includes Jastram Engineering Ltd. steering tillers and cylinders with mounts and stops designed and provided by Nautican for installation directly on the headbox and for connection to the existing hydraulic system and controls.

Today Nautican shipped three Integrated Propulsion Units with high efficiency nozzles, pre-swirl stators and triple rudders combined as one system and ready for installation.

These will be installed on a 2,200 HP shallow draft triple screw ATB tug working in the harsh elements of Alaska.

The F/V Pacific Fury was in drydock this week for its regular maintenance and inspection. The F/V Pacific Fury, F/V Nordic Fury and F/V Arctic Fury are all fitted with Nautican triple rudder systems, giving a remarkable improvement in maneuverability.

Nautican Triple Rudders greatly improve the maneuverability of vessels with nozzles. Single rudder systems can stall easily and cause a reduction in thrust, while many multi-blade systems can choke off the water flow through the nozzle.

The difference in the Nautican Triple Rudder it that it uses a differential linkage, a unique geometry, high aspect ratio foils and the cascade effect to create higher lift forces with less drag. The entire propeller outflow is deflected up to 60 degrees to the side without the loss of thrust or loading of the engine. This deflection makes it possible for even large vessels and barge trains to make tight turns. In trials rudder side force is measured to be 74 percent of the bollard pull.
