The Joint Center for Aerospace Technology Innovation (JCATI) was established in 2012 to support the aerospace industry in Washington State by:

Pursuing joint industry-university research in new technologies that are relevant to aerospace firms;

providing aerospace industry-focused research opportunities for engineering and computer science students at the University of Washington, Washington Sta

te University, and Washington’s other public four-year institutions of higher education, through assisting the development of internship programs and undergraduate and graduate student research opportunities that give students hands-on experience with aerospace firms;

and in concert with aerospace firms and aerospace industry associations, identifying research needs and opportunities for technology transfer that benefit the State’s aerospace industry.

JCATI funded WSU researcher Amit Bandyopadhyay is working with National Aeronautics and Space Administration - NASA using simulated moon rocks as source material for 3D printing. Not his JCATI project, but still this is very cool. Congratulations, Dr. Bandyopadhyay.

PULLMAN, Wash. - Imagine landing on the moon or Mars, putting rocks through a 3-D printer and making something useful - like a needed wrench or replacement part.

JCATI was featured in an editorial found on page 38 of Friday's Puget Sound Business Journal. The piece is written Earll Murman, Emeritus Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Ford Professor of Engineering, and Roger Myers, executive director of Aerojet Rocketdyne and JCATI Board member.

The piece focuses on ways to effectively establish public-private partnerships and how to establish a culture of innovation in academia.

In July 2013, JCATI issued 16 awards to faculty representing 3 universities across Washington State. A total of $1.27 million was awarded in JCATI’s second round of grant awards in 2013 to 16 research projects with the goal to solve technological questions relevant to the Washington aerospace industry. In this round of applications, the JCATI Board of Directors chose projects from a variety of aerospace-related challenges. Research funded includes investigations into the performance of composite materials for use in commercial aircraft manufacturing, the performance of aviation biofuels, and the collaboration and control of multiple unmanned aerial systems.
