SSF is partnering with Berger Partnership PS and Zimmerman Architecture on Vale Matcha, a new agricultural project on Whidbey Island that will bring commercial-scale matcha production to Washington State. The farm has started with 12,000 Camellia sinensis plants across three acres, with plans to grow significantly over time.

The project will include specialized growing infrastructure, a future tasting room, a half-acre greenhouse, and a 30,000 SF Seattle processing facility supporting production. Visitors will learn more about how matcha is grown, harvested, and prepared while experiencing the farm firsthand.

SSF is excited to be part of a project that brings together agriculture, hospitality, and a Pacific Northwest approach to matcha production.

Last week, we attended Historic Seattle 2026 Preservation Celebration, where three projects received awards:

University Cooperative School, with CAST architecture and Sellen Construction, received the Preserving Neighborhood Character Award; Pacific Apartments, with ARC Architects and Rafn Company, received the Best Preservation Project Award; and The People’s Wall, with Black Heritage Society of Washington, received the Community Advocacy Award.

Congratulations to the project teams and this year’s honorees. We were glad to be part of the celebration.

Three civic projects supported by SSF’s structural engineering team have been recognized in the 2026 AIA Washington Council Civic Design Awards!

The Snoqualmie Tribe Child Development Center received an Honor Award. Designed by BA for the Snoqualmie Tribe, the project supports childcare, cultural education, food sovereignty, and community gathering.

Field Arts & Events Hall in Port Angeles received a Citation Award. Designed by LMN Architects for the Port Angeles Waterfront Center, the multidisciplinary arts and gathering space serves communities across the Northern Olympic Peninsula.

Mercer Slough Farmstand in Bellevue received an Honorable Mention for Building Integration. Designed by Environmental Works for the City of Bellevue Department of Parks & Community Services, the project creates a welcoming public connection to Mercer Slough’s agricultural landscape.

SSF is pleased to announce that our project with and
, the Green Lake Library was featured in Retrofit magazine. The seismic retrofit introduced steel moment frames, concrete shear walls, wall anchorage, and reinforced the historic hollow clay tile partitions, bringing the building to a higher level of seismic performance. These upgrades were thoughtfully integrated with the library’s historic architecture as part of a broader renovation. We are grateful to have worked with the project team on this thoughtful renovation of a treasured Seattle landmark.

Our project, the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank with Graham Baba Architects was recently featured in the DJC. Located in downtown Vashon, the project includes a new 3,700-square-foot food distribution building and a renovated 3,500-square-foot building for offices and support services. Together, the two buildings create a welcoming, grocery-style shopping experience with access to essential resources. SSF teamed with Theorem Architecture Group (TAG) and Lydig Construction to deliver a new 50,000-square-foot administrative building for the dental school at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima Valley. SSF provided structural engineering services for the project.

The two-story, steel-framed building over concrete-filled metal deck includes offices, conference rooms, lounge areas, large classrooms, an open atrium, and a cantilevered second floor. The team worked together through the design-build process.

Founded in 2005, Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences is a nonprofit university offering multiple health sciences programs on a growing campus that brings together students and faculty from several disciplines.
