Congratulations to Dr. Sep Makhsous, who recently received the 2021 Dr. James A. Cottone Award for Excellence in Investigative Research. This award, given out by the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention was given to Dr. Makhsous for his study evaluating aerosol persistence during dental procedures in real time.
The transmission of aerosol particles is a leading cause of exposure for many infectious diseases, including COVID-19. Dr. Makhsous and his team, along with School of Dentistry faculty members Dr. Ricardo Schwedhelm, Dr. Greg Huang, and Dr. Daniel Chan, are investigating the integration of real-time aerosol sensors in a dental setting to help evaluate and improve ways to eliminate aerosol transmission. They are actively looking for collaborators to help them with understanding the current limitations in controlling aerosolized viruses and pathogens during dental procedures.
If this research interests you and you would like to learn more, please contact Dr. Makhsous at [email protected].
