SWAN LAKE HYDRO EXPANSION UTILIZED / RECORD RAINFALL
Ketchikan, AK – After a summer of record-setting rainfall, the Swan Lake Hydroelectric Facility reached full capacity following expansion totaling an additional 15 feet of storage for the first time. Due to drought conditions since construction was finished three years ago, this summer marked the first-time water levels made it all the way up on the flashboards, forcing a reservoir spill on July 24.
PPM was contracted to perform concrete demolition work on the spillway, procure and place Owner-designed embedded metals and seal plates for the flashboard system (a unique element to this project), erect the flashboard system, place Owner-provided embedded metals for the vertical gate and erect the vertical gate, place reinforced concrete on the wing walls, construct a new reinforced concrete center pier, and modify and seal existing parapet walls. PPM also made modifications to the intake building and constructed a utility trench and conduit bank that carries tubing and cabling from the intake building to the new vertical gate

Pacific Pile & Marine’s D.B. Pacific Lifter completed Phase 1 of the Port of Alaska's new Petroleum and Cement Terminal this past week. The access trestle and concrete deck is shown along with multiple smaller PPM cranes that really put the size of the largest West Coast based floating crane into perspective.
Extreme tides and curious beluga whales and other marine mammals often dictated the work window but in the end it all went very well.
Phase 2 has been awarded to PPM and our team looks forward to resuming work next spring.

Pile Driving Contractors Association 2020 AWARDS
Three Category Winner!
The PPM team has been recognized as a company that is capable of doing challenging work often in inhospitable environments. We’re able to do so because we have some of the best people in the industry. While we know that to be the case, it’s nice when the industry recognizes the accomplishments of our team as well.
Three projects in three different size and value categories awarded as Project of the Year:
• Land Category – Yakima River Bridges
• Land Category – Riley Slough Bridge Replacement Project
• Marine Category – Pier 62-63 Alaskan Way Improvements
All three projects are featured in the current issue of PileDriver magazine.
This is an especially celebrated accomplishment as the review committee cannot recall another contractor being selected for as many as 3 awards in a single year. Big accomplishment underscored by the difficult work being performed by our capable people.

Safety Week is officially underway. We had a solid start this morning beginning with an address from Mike Day and Wil Clark covering PPM’s goals for the week and reminding us that safety is an everyday focus and doesn’t end with Safety Week.

Thank you to Derrick with MSA for the Fall Arrest equipment demonstration this morning. Some great takeaways. A few photos from this morning’s demonstration.
