What does it take to design a deck capable of supporting 4,000 pounds per square foot?

On the Alaska Marine Lines Skagway Provider, it meant a structure engineered for railcars, heavy equipment, and stacked containers, topped with a 5" concrete wear deck that protects the steel through years of loading and offloading.

Kalohi & Nāulu, two barges serving distinct purposes, are the first new barges added to the Young Brothers, LLC fleet in nearly 20 years.

Kalohi (286') — Built to serve the smaller, more challenging port approaches of Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi. Five cargo ramps. Ballastable for shifting tidal conditions. Named for the channel that connects the two islands.

Nāulu (365') — The largest barge in Young Brothers' fleet, designed for maximum cargo capacity to meet peak interisland demand efficiently. Named for a sudden sea breeze and rain shower in Kawaihae.

Custom-designed by Hockema Group, they reflect our dedication to continuous improvement.
