GATLINBURG NATIVE NEWSFLASH

A Tennessee Army National Guard flight crew rescued a hiker Tuesday morning in a remote section of Great Smoky Mountains National Park after severe cold-weather injuries were reported.

The rescue began shortly before 8:30 a.m. ET on February 24, 2026, when the hiker activated an emergency SOS using a Garmin inReach device at Double Springs Gap Shelter, south of Gatlinburg near the Tennessee–North Carolina line.

Park Rangers were alerted, and a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from Joint Base McGhee-Tyson launched shortly after 9:30 a.m.

The aircraft arrived on scene roughly 15 minutes later. A flight paramedic was hoisted down to assess the hiker before both were lifted back into the helicopter. The extraction was completed around 9:55 a.m.

The hiker was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville and arrived at approximately 10:25 a.m. Specific details about the individual’s condition have not been publicly released beyond severe cold-related injuries.

The crew included Chief Warrant Officer 4 Luke Hargrave, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Corey Holloway, Sgt. Christopher Burke, Master Sgt. Tracy Banta, and Sgt. 1st Class Nolan Ogle.

Winter conditions in the Smokies can shift quickly, especially in high elevations along the Tennessee–North Carolina border. Officials say emergency communication devices played a critical role in the rapid response.

❄️Winter Weather Awareness❄️

Sevier County EMA is aware of and closely monitoring the potential for significant winter weather that could impact our area this weekend. This system may bring snow, ice, or a combination of both.

We are actively monitoring forecasts, evaluating conditions, and coordinating with our partners to determine what actions may be needed as the situation develops. We encourage all residents and visitors to do the same.

According to the US National Weather Service Morristown Tennessee, there is a possibility for impactful wintry precipitation across portions of the region. At this time, there remains significant uncertainty regarding the exact track and intensity of the system, including where snow, ice, or mixed precipitation may occur. Forecast updates are expected throughout the week.

How should you start preparing now?
• Check your supply of food and drinking water
• Make sure you have enough prescription medications and medical supplies
• Review your winter weather kit, including flashlights, batteries, blankets, and a phone charger
• Fuel vehicles ahead of time and check tires and windshield wipers
• Plan for limited travel, especially those in ‘shaded spots and higher tops’, areas of higher elevation and less-traveled secondary roads
• Be prepared for possible power outages caused by downed trees or power lines
• If using alternative heating sources, ensure they are used safely with proper ventilation

Hazardous travel may be possible due to snow and ice-covered roadways. Residents and visitors are encouraged to prepare now rather than wait until conditions worsen.

Reminder: Never run generators, grills, or fuel-powered equipment inside homes, garages, or enclosed spaces. If using kerosene or other combustible heating sources, follow manufacturer instructions and ensure adequate ventilation.

All residents and visitors are encouraged to sign up to receive CodeRED Emergency Alerts. You can register here: https://shorturl.at/Mu8xr

Please continue to follow updates from the US National Weather Service Morristown Tennessee and Sevier County EMA as forecasts become clearer through the week.
