The professional commercial roofing services include flat roofing systems, metal roofing, commercial roof replacement, commercial roof repair, commercial box gutters and select commercial building construction. Every project is assigned a dedicated project manager to ensure hands-on oversight, clear communication and smooth ex*****on from start to finish. The Educator Externship is being offered to local educators again this summer.

For four different dates this month, local school staff members had an opportunity to sign up to participate. Each week, about 10 are chosen to tour two local industries. They find out what the company does and what opportunities there are for employment. The teachers receive a stipend after submitting a report about what they learned and how they will take that back to their school and help students.

Today was the second day of the program. Seven educators spent the morning at Schneck Medical Center and the afternoon at Walmart Distribution Center, both in Seymour. Schneck is the hospital in Jackson County and also has medical offices in Jennings, Scott and Washington counties, while Walmart distributes merchandise to its retail stores and also has a truck driver training school and a truck maintenance shop.

JCIDC would like to thank both of these companies for giving educators an opportunity to learn more about what they do, and we thank the educators for participating in order to benefit their students.

To learn more about these companies, schneckmed.org and walmart.com.

In this Workforce Wednesday feature, we are spotlighting Jackson County high school students who participate in Work-Based Learning. WBL consists of sustained interactions with industry or community professionals in real workplace settings that foster in-depth, firsthand engagement with the tasks required of a given career field that are aligned to curriculum and instruction.

Next is Sallie Nicholson, a recent graduate of Seymour High School, who works for Rose Acre Farms in Seymour.

How long have you worked there?
June 9, 2025, and I will be continuing my internship through this summer.

What is your job title or role?
Communications intern

What are your responsibilities?
I help design graphics for Rose Acre Farms' social media. In addition to design work, I contribute to projects, such as the company directory, the online phone book and the seasonal newsletter. With that being said, I have had the opportunity to train on other tasks, like covering front desk.

What do you like about what you get to do?
I love having the ability to use my creativity to design posts for holidays and various occasions. My coworkers are super supportive, especially when the content created is edible.

How often are you there?
I typically work Monday through Friday for around two hours, but my hours will increase this summer.

How do you benefit from Work-Based Learning?
I benefit from this program because it allowed me to focus on my specific interests in a way that regular classes did not. I have always been interested in the creative and artistic side of communications rather than the business aspect. Through Rose Acre Farms, I have been able to explore that creativity directly.

What would you say to other students to encourage them to do Work-Based Learning?
Work-Based Learning is probably the best class I've taken at SHS. It is focused on what I am going to college for, and it helped slow down my senioritis.

What else were you involved in at school?
I was involved in Seymour Swimming and had the honor of being part of the back-to-back conference and sectional winning team. As well, I was part of Seymour Marching Owls and Guard, where I played the saxophone.

What are you involved in outside of school?
For the past five years, I have participated in the Special Olympics Polar Plunge with the Seymour Tsunamis. I also volunteer with Immanuel Lutheran's vacation Bible school, helping with Christ-centered crafts.

What are your plans after high school?
I plan on attending Indiana University in Bloomington to study journalism and the creative side of media advertising.

Founded in 1925, O&K has evolved over the years from a company making nails and then iron wire to one that makes cold heading steel wire.

Processed at room temperature, cold heading steel wire is used to manufacture automobile parts and more. Many parts manufacturers use O&K’s cold heading steel wire because of its low material loss and high strength. The company processes the wire using its own unique processes based on technologies gained over the years to the desired strength and diameter tailored to customer needs.

The products are transformed into various parts and used primarily in cars.
They also play a vital role in a wide variety of parts used in construction machinery, robots and so on.

The Chicago facility, established as O&K Steel USA Inc., opened in 1980 for market research and to streamline exports, and production facilities were installed. The second U.S. plant opened in Seymour in 2010. They are officially known as O&K American Corp.
