We’re excited to announce Budderfly’s Modernizing American Cities program, in partnership with global energy technology leader, Schneider Electric.

Budderfly is committing $500 million to help municipalities modernize energy infrastructure and become more energy resilient — at no upfront cost.

With commercial electricity prices on the rise, local governments are balancing the need to invest in outdated infrastructure with already strained budgets. By partnering with Budderfly and Schneider Electric, municipalities can make those upgrades and protect essential services without taking on debt or drawing on existing capital budgets.

Budderfly is launching the program with the City Of Cadillac, Michigan, where we’re deploying infrastructure investments across seven municipal facilities. Upgrades will include solar generation, battery energy storage systems, high-efficiency HVAC, advanced lighting, EV charging infrastructure, and integrated microgrid capabilities.

"Singelyn has seen a $250,000 annual drop in maintenance and repair expenses. And the company has cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 670 metric tons, equivalent to a year of electricity for 130 homes or 81 million cell-phone charges."

For David Singelyn, modernizing his restaurants wasn't just about energy. It was about creating better environments for the people who work in them every day. The second-generation McDonald's operator has modernized 26 locations in partnership with Budderfly, helping improve comfort, lower costs, and reduce emissions across his portfolio.

What does $1.5M in energy and infrastructure upgrades look like?

For OEM Controls, it means 18 HVAC replacements, a rooftop solar system, and facility-wide LED lighting — a full transformation powered by Budderfly.

The Singelyn Group needed to replace rooftop HVAC units across 32 McDonald's locations. The cost was well into seven figures, and they couldn't fund it on their timeline.

Partnering with Budderfly made the upgrades possible, including a move from traditional RTUs to heat pump units. They've saved $75,000 on utilities, but the bigger win has been maintenance and repair.

As Dave Singelyn shares, "Not having to constantly repair old, faulty, unreliable equipment has amounted to at least a quarter point on our P&L just in that maintenance and repair line item." There have been fewer tech call-outs and less capital spent on parts.

The restaurants stay comfortable for crew and customers, the new units put them ahead of stricter regulation, and the project has avoided or reduced 670 metric tons of emissions, the equivalent of 81 million cell phone charges.
