TIPS FOR THE UPCOMING WINTER EVENT:
A “typical freeze event” in home water pipes happens at around 20 degrees Fahrenheit. You should consider dripping your faucets on the hot and cold side if temps are below freezing at 32 degrees Fahrenheit or less. Leave your faucets dripping until the temperature is consistently above freezing just to be on the safe side. Faucets connected to pipes along exterior walls and uninsulated areas, such as an attic, should be priority for dripping. Drip the water at the rate of one drop every second.
Open all doors to all rooms in house to allow heat to get to them. Open all cabinets in kitchen and bathrooms to allow heat to get to pipes to keep them from freezing.
Close off valves supplying water to outdoor hydrants and drain those hydrants. Remove all water hoses from hydrants. Never leave a hose attached. Put a cover over outdoor hydrants.
Outdoor tankless water heaters need to be wrapped with insulation.
Make sure to have a water meter key on hand to be able to shut off your water in case a pipe bursts at your home. You can purchase at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ace Hardware or any of the local plumbing supply houses. If you do not have one and a pipe bursts, call your City Water Department to get someone to come to shut it off.
Make sure you have plenty of propane. Get firewood in the event you lose power and may need your fireplace as a source of heat. Generators are a nice backup to have but make sure you have gas on hand to fuel it. Never use an oven or gas top to heat your home. Make sure if using electric heaters in home that they are out in the open and can’t catch fire.
Keep external dryer vents and other natural gas equipment clear from ice or snow build-up. Blocked vents can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide build-up.
Test carbon monoxide detectors and make sure batteries are new. Change your HVAC filter and make sure heat is operating.
Make sure to have flashlights (extra batteries) or candles, extra blankets and sleeping bags to stay warm. Fill a bathtub with water in case you need it to flush toilets. Make sure your outside pets have heat in their dog houses or bring them inside. Their water will freeze outside so get a heated bowl or change out water every morning and evening.
And stay off the roads if they are bad! Stay Warm and Safe!
