All 3 were brothers getting out of the armed services and had a vision of wanting to start a new business. Herendeen Brothers business was originally in a small building behind what is now Buffalo Bills Restaurant on West Main Street in Shortsville NY. There the brothers sold some hardware items but also provided home services in heating, electrical and plumbing. The building today is dilapidated.
In a short few years the business grew and so did the inventory. The brothers moved the business to 34 West Main Street. Again the space began to get to small. From there they moved to 32 West Main Street, right next door. This building gave them a little more space on the 1st floor but also gave them room on the 2nd floor above. In the 1960’s, Walt Barry moved his grocery store from 34 West Main Street to across the street, 27 West Main Street. This left the building vacant. Busting at the seams again, the Herendeens opened up a doorway from 32 West Main to 34 West Main. The Masonic Lodge that owned the 34 West Main Street building and used the upstairs for many years. They moved out in the early 1990’s, Again Herendeens grew taking over that space too. The business has been located at 32-34 West Main Street in Shortsville for the past 60+ years. As of January 2009, with the weak economy, we have made a decision to deal strictly with HVAC service, sales and installations. For over 60 years Herendeens has provided the community with an inventory of paint, hand tools, lawn and garden equipment, and various hardware items. For the most part these items we will not longer be offering. We will still retail sales of a few hardware items such as nuts and bolts, carry a complete line of heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical equipment. The primary focus of Herendeens from the day it opened was to provide Heating, Cooling, Plumbing and Electrical Installations and Service to the surrounding communities and the hardware store was more of a convenience for the business and open to the public for their personal needs. Through these trying times and fierce competition it is a convenience, the hardware store, we can no longer afford to bear. Cutting back the inventory and reducing our size Herendeen’s will continue to press forward with a different approach. We have closed down the 34 West Main side and have rented it out. February 2011 brought a new look to the old store. The 32 West Main Street side received and new facelift. The floors were sanded and refinished, the paint was freshened up and new displays were made. This might be the 1st time this side of the building ever seen a major renovation. This new service center – store is built to handle an everyday work load and future growth. Going forward into the future, we will be here to provide quality Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical services for another 60+ years. We service all kinds of furnaces, heat pumps, boilers, air conditioners, well pumps and even oil burners. We would love to serve you When you have a problem give us a call.
