Pitting is where most surface prep quietly fails.

Media packs into the low spots. Chemicals pool and don't fully rinse. You get a surface that looks clean and isn't — and the coating tells you about it later.

The question that decides whether a job clears compliance: where does the removed material end up?

Everything coming off the surface runs through HEPA filtration — all of it, not most of it. Where the job or the regulation calls for it, carbon filters scrub VOCs on top of that.

Happens more than I would have ever guessed.

"My mother-in-law saw your video and told me to chase your van down."

That's happened more than once. Not sure what mothers-in-law have with laser restoration, but my guess is good taste.

The best story of meeting a future client in public?

A car sped up behind me. I noticed, kind of.

"woah"

That's the reaction I get nine times out of ten when a client peers over my shoudler to see the work.

"that's wild."

I know, right?

So what's actually happening?

The laser isn't burning the rust off. Nothing touches the surface. It's closer to a microscopic demolition, repeated about a hundred thousand times a second.

Three things make it work.

Rust absorbs light. Steel reflects it.

That's the whole trick. The beam is tuned to a wavelength that oxide, paint, grease, and carbon drink up — and that clean metal mostly bounces back. The contaminant is doing the absorbing. The metal underneath is basically a mirror.

The pulse ends before the heat can spread.

You can pass your finger through a candle flame without getting burned if you move fast enough. Same physics. Each pulse lasts about a hundred billionths of a second — long enough to dump kilowatts of peak power into that top layer, over long before the heat has time to conduct down into the steel. The rust gets v***rized. The metal barely warms up.

It doesn't melt off. It leaves.

That top layer goes straight from solid to v***r, and the v***r expands so violently it forms a tiny plasma cloud with its own shockwave. That's the crackling you hear. The rust isn't sliding off — it's being ejected.

And here's my favorite part: it stops on its own.

Every material has an ablation threshold — the energy level where it starts to come apart. Rust's is low. Steel's is much higher. Set the power in between and the laser physically cannot damage the substrate. It runs out of things to remove and the reaction just... ends.

No media. No grit blasted into the pores. No chemical slurry to dispose of. No one sanding a part down along with the corrosion.

Just light, tuned to the difference between what you want gone and what you want kept.
