Building an RNG facility creates the asset. Keeping it running creates the value.

ESI designed and built two renewable natural gas facilities in the southeastern U.S. - then stayed on to operate them. One sits near the pipeline and runs "steady as a rock." The other, 18 miles from the nearest pipeline, runs as a virtual pipeline: RNG compressed into trailers, hauled to a decant site, and injected there - roughly three loads a day, where every load that moves on time is revenue protected.

The ESI philosophy: take ownership of the outcome - because every clean operating day can mean $200,000 to $300,000 in revenue.

Backed by an O&M team of 70+ operators, the result is an estimated 97% uptime across the portfolio.

Building the facility creates the asset. Keeping it running creates the value.

The AI boom has a power problem. Landfills have power.

Data center developers facing five-year-plus interconnection queues have started generating power on-site - roughly 101 GW of behind-the-meter natural gas generation has already been announced. When power is the constraint, energy that's already sitting there gets interesting.

And there's a lot of it: most of America's 598 landfill gas facilities generate proven, dispatchable renewable baseload - yet per the EPA, over 70% of the country's ~2,600 municipal landfills still make no beneficial use of their methane. On-site compute doesn't need a grid connection, and the EPA now promotes onsite data centers at landfills as a bridge model, with flows as low as 100 scfm potentially qualifying.

The part we don't have to speculate about: ESI has already built an off-grid landfill-gas-to-energy microgrid for a Utah client - no grid connection at all.

Distributed renewable baseload for modular and edge compute, bridge revenue during an RNG buildout, generation at compute-grade uptime - that's the work ESI has done since 2007.

Supporting renewable natural gas across 17 swine sites.

Most RNG stories are about building the plant. This one is about keeping it running - at scale.

ESI has taken on operations and maintenance for a 17-site swine methane capture program, managing the gas collection, conditioning, and processing systems that capture methane from manure lagoons for RNG production.

Swine operations bring real O&M challenges: covered lagoons must stay airtight across huge surface areas, gas quality shifts with the seasons, and 17 distributed sites demand centralized monitoring to catch issues before they affect uptime. That's what our SCADA platform and field service teams are built for.

From development through long-term operations, ESI is in it for the long haul.

Inside the Industry - Term of the Week: Beneficial Use

Beneficial use is the practice of putting captured landfill gas to productive use as an energy resource, instead of flaring it or letting it escape.

Landfill gas is roughly half methane - a potent greenhouse gas and a valuable fuel. Beneficial use captures it and turns it into renewable natural gas, electricity, or fuel for nearby operations: keeping emissions out of the air while creating a domestic energy resource from waste that already exists.

That's the work our team is built for - from development studies through engineering, construction, and startup, ESI delivers the facilities that turn landfill gas into reliable renewable energy.

Twenty-one years. Thirty-five plants. A hundred phone calls a day. Meet David Curington.

Ask David Curington what he does, and he won't lead with the resume - not the nine RNG plants, or the twenty-six landfill power plants before them. He'll just say: "I'm not an engineer, I'm just a carpenter."

It undersells a lot. Construction is the family trade, going back three generations - he was fetching nails on job sites by twelve. Twenty-one years and thirty-five plants into this industry, he says he could build one without a drawing. His days start at 6:30, run two or three projects at once, and average a hundred-plus calls - but ask about the pecking order and he waves it off: "We're a team."

At seventy-two, what keeps him going? "Because I enjoy it." Then he laughs: "I can't go fishing every day."

People like David are why our plants come in on schedule. Proud to have him on the team.

Building two RNG plants at once - and delivering both on schedule.

Two landfill-gas-to-RNG plants, hundreds of miles apart, designed, built, and commissioned in parallel - both delivered per contract, with one within a single day of its contractual completion date. On a two-year project, that's not luck.

How: one team moving in lockstep across both sites, fully in-house engineering (process, mechanical, controls, piping - not subbed out), and forward-thinking design. one runs at ~3,500 CFM today but was engineered for 7,000 SCFM, so it can double capacity without a second build.

Engineering the future of renewable natural gas.

We took a Missouri landfill gas project from raw resource to running facility - a 3,000 SCFM landfill-gas-to-RNG plant, completed in 2024, turning what was once waste gas into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas.

ESI delivered the full suite of engineering: civil, structural, geotechnical, process, mechanical, electrical, network, and controls. And because balance-of-plant equipment was fabricated in-house, we kept supply-chain risk down and the project on its critical path.

What set this project apart was doing it under one roof. Our sister companies Maddox Industrial Group handled process piping and installation, and Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger fabricated and installed the heat exchanger on site. One team, from development through commissioning.

Have an RNG or biogas project on the horizon? Let's talk.

Your renewable energy facility may be producing gas, but is it operating at its full potential?

Long-term performance depends on more than startup and commissioning. Effective operations and maintenance programs help improve uptime, optimize RIN generation, reduce unplanned downtime, and maximize the return on your infrastructure investment.

Our latest blog explores why expert O&M is one of the most important investments an RNG facility can make and the key indicators that reveal whether your operation is performing at its best.
