Quick tip Tuesday:
Getting into the winter months, be sure that your damper on your chimney works and to use your fireplace only when desired. If it is mainly for decoration be sure to seal the chimney with a piece of foam along with closing the damper to help keep heat in your home. Always check the flue before operating your fireplace.

Quick Tip Tuesday:
Screen savers are not energy savers. Using a screen saver may in fact use more energy than not using one, and the power-down feature may not work if you have a screen saver activated. In fact, modern LCD color monitors do not need screen savers at all.

Quick Tip Tuesday: Fall/Winter Special Tip

Keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning. Keeping the damper open is like keeping a window wide open during the winter; it allows warm air to go right up the chimney.
When you use the fireplace, reduce heat loss by opening dampers in the bottom of the firebox (if provided) or open the nearest window slightly -- approximately 1 inch -- and close doors leading into the room. Lower the thermostat setting to between 50° and 55°F.

Screen savers are not energy savers. Using a screen saver may in fact use more energy than not using one, and the power-down feature may not work if you have a screen saver activated. In fact, modern LCD color monitors do not need screen savers at all. Completely power down your equipment when it is not in use to save on energy costs.

Quick tip Tuesday:
Keep ALL AC supply registers open. Closing off rooms or registers will not save money and your home heating/cooling works most efficiently as one complete unit.

Quick Tip Tuesday:
Here's an easy way to determine if your showerhead is water efficient. Take the showerhead test.

1) Get a bucket and a watch/clock that counts seconds.
2) Place the bucket underneath the showerhead.
3) Turn the shower on all the way using cold water.
4) Time how long it takes for one gallon of water to fall into the bucket.

If it takes:
- Less than 24 seconds to fill a gallon of water, then you do not have the most efficient showerhead because its flow exceeds the recommended 2.5 gallons per minute.
- More than 24 seconds to fill a gallon of water, then you have an efficient showerhead.

Quick Tip Tuesday:
Leaks between your living space and your attic, such as pull down stairs or a hatch can cost you up to $300 in energy lost every year. Buy an attic entrance cover. At an average of $70 it is well worth it.

Quick Tip Tuesday:
Study your family’s lighting needs and look for ways to use controls like sensors, dimmers, or timers to reduce lighting use.

Quick tip Tuesday:
Placing plants and trees strategically around your home can have a major impact on energy use and comfort. Placing trees twice the distance from the house as they are tall can reduce the wind's effect on the house by 75%.

Quick Tip Tuesday:
Replace your clothes washer with an ENERGY STAR labeled model when it is time. Clothes washers use energy to both clean clothes and heat water, so to save on energy costs, wash your clothes in cooler water. ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers use 50% less water and 70 % less energy per load; that's up to $100 every year.

Quick Tip Tuesday:
When you shower or take a bath, use the bathroom fan to remove the heat and humidity from your home. Your laundry room might also benefit from spot ventilation. Make sure bathroom and kitchen fans are vented to the outside (not just to the attic).
