I get into three or four homes a day, and i know two things to be true.

Thing One: it is increasingly expensive to heat your home and many of you are driving your home comfort temperature lower and lower, hoping that it will be less expensive.

Thing Two: many of you are struggling to stay healthy or recover from the seemingly endless parade of bugs and illnesses.

As a Heating Professional I need to tell you these are related Things! The temperature and humidity at which we maintain our homes is scientific!

Maintaining an indoor temperature of 68°F to 72°F (20°C–22°C) combined with a relative humidity (RH) of 40% to 60% is optimal for reducing the survival and spread of viruses and bacteria. Viruses and bacteria thrive in cooler, drier air, while this "sweet spot" helps keep human respiratory defenses strong and renders particles inactive faster.

Quite possibly, in your quest to save on your heating bill, you are prolonging your families illnesses! Especially if you have small and school-aged kids.

And, Jimmy Carter was wrong…you don’t save as much as you think you do. The break-over point is more than 10° for more than 72 hours.

Something to think about.

Alright Locals…take your heating system some hot tea, encourage it, take a selfie with it so it feels appreciated. Parts are running low…

And make sure the garage door goes all the way down and stays there!

This is a PSA…you should take time today to visit with your heating appliance and make sure it feels appreciated. The cold isn’t going anywhere, the local servicemen are tired, and the supply houses are running out of parts.

And if you are enjoying warm weather while your house sits vacant…it’s time for somebody to check on it.

You have used alot more heating oil than you think…have it filled.

That is all.

Alright locals…

Three: that’s the number of calls today with frozen garages…watch the door go down and count to ten before you drive away!

Four: that’s the number of calls that are out of heating oil…go check, do it now. It’s been colder longer than you realize and you’ve burned up a lot of oil.

Five: that’s the number of empty propane tanks…if you are struggling to heat your home with propane get a magnetic block heater and stick on the tank to warm the propane up enough to evaporate.

There’s no ground cover…if your water service is prone to freezing start taking action now.

Be safe, be warm, enjoy your Christmas weekend!

Here comes a big price increase for Natural Gas. Plan to have your system serviced and optimized this year. Not now…it’s summer and stupid busy…but this winter sometime.

ENSTAR Natural Gas is seeking a 26.79% rate hike, with a 23.21% interim increase taking effect July 1 as the Regulatory Commission of Alaska investigates whether the proposal is justified.

For the locals who are getting concerned about possible volcanic ash and their heating appliances…

If you have a high efficiency appliance that is directly connected to outdoor air for combustion, ash will not do it any favors and a significant amount could destroy it.

You can shut the unit off…but that’s a short term solution.

You may be able to filter the air…but the filter will plug up quickly and lock out your appliance.

You may be able to disconnect the incoming air and let the unit pull air from inside the structure…this would be the best longer term solution.

If you’d like help determining a good course of action, give me a call and I’ll see about stopping by.

This would be a good time to have your annual service done…just saying!
