Much of what is standard today wasn’t developed in isolation.

In the early stages, this work was shaped through shared observation, discussion, and working through challenges as they arose. There were no established methods to rely on, only what could be tested and understood in real time.

This image shows GRL founders together with Mohamad Hussein, who was involved in those early efforts and continues that work today as Executive Director.

While the process has evolved over time, the role of collaboration and field experience remains unchanged.

Testing delays are often caused by factors outside the testing process itself.

Site access, coordination between crews, and changing conditions can all influence how efficiently work progresses. In many cases, those variables are already affecting the pace before testing even begins.

Improving efficiency often comes from addressing those surrounding factors early.

There are times when something doesn’t feel quite right before any results show it.

It is not always tied to one clear issue. Conditions, site activity, and how the work is progressing can all influence how things behave. At first, it can be subtle, but those early differences often shape what follows.

Recognizing those moments is a key part of experience in the field.

More testing doesn’t always lead to better decisions.

There is a point where adding more data does not create more clarity. It can make interpretation harder, especially when small differences start to overlap.

In practice, value comes from knowing when the information is enough to support a decision and move the work forward.

You can learn a lot about a site before any testing begins.

Initial observations often provide important context. Ground conditions, surface moisture, access, and how the site is organized all start to shape how the work will be approached.

These details may not be formally recorded, but they often influence how engineers interpret what follows.

Plans rarely unfold the way they are planned to.

Field conditions rarely match assumptions exactly. Ground conditions vary, access shifts, and sequencing evolves as other operations move around the work. As a result, the situation on site often looks different than it did in the initial plan.

Understanding how to work through those changes is a core part of field engineering.

On paper, two tests can look exactly the same.

In the field, small differences tend to show up. Ground conditions vary, setup shifts slightly, and timing or surrounding activity can influence how a test actually behaves.

Most of the time, it’s not one major change. It’s a combination of small things that add up.

Recognizing those differences is a big part of how results are understood.

Memorial Day is a time set aside to remember those who served and did not return home.

It is also a moment to recognize the lasting absence carried by their families and communities.

Before these methods became established practice, much of the work was still being developed in the field.

Early testing often relied on simpler tools and direct observation. Engineers worked through real site conditions to better understand how to measure and interpret performance.

This image shows part of that early work, involving individuals who would later help shape GRL. The approaches developed during this time still influence how dynamic testing is carried out today.

While the process has evolved, the importance of field experience remains just as strong.

Not everything that happens on site makes it into a report.

Field conditions change throughout the day and work often adapts in response to those changes. While reports focus on the information needed for decision‑making, they cannot capture every observation or moment that contributes to understanding what occurs on site.

Field experience helps provide that additional context.
