Last Wednesday was a monumental moment for the Monticello-Wayne County community and for our team as we celebrated the groundbreaking ceremonies for the AJ Lloyd and Provalus projects.

What started as an idea dreamed up in 2022 and pitched to various stakeholders has grown into something much bigger through design, collaboration, belief, and the determination of a group of people who were willing to see an idea turn into action.

A huge thank-you to Congressman Hal Rogers, State Representative Kenny Upchurch, Mayor Kenny Catron, Judge Scott Gehring, Mr. Roger Guffey, the Wayne County School District, the City Council, and many others for seeing the possibilities this project presented and persevering to see it through. Because of your collaborative efforts, Monticello will be better. We’ll have a place our children and future generations can enjoy while preserving the history and nostalgia so many alumni hold onto. We’ll also see tourism growth with the adaptive reuse of the AJ Lloyd facility in front and new jobs through Provalus in the back of the campus, creating a positive economic impact for the entire community.

This project is deeply personal to so many people who grew up and attended school at AJ Lloyd—whether it was high school in its early days or middle school in more recent years. Some of our best memories were made inside those big sandstone walls.

After years of vacancy, it is incredibly exciting to see this historic landmark given a new purpose. What a privilege to help reimagine and preserve a place that has meant so much to this community, so it can continue serving Monticello for another 65 years and beyond.

Throwback Thursday — Lake Cumberland Primary Care, Monticello, Kentucky

Lake Cumberland Primary Care continues to stand as a true beacon in the Monticello community. Conveniently located right off Highway 90, this facility was designed with accessibility and patient care at the forefront.

Offering acute, preventative, and chronic care services, along with on-site x-ray capabilities, the medical office is paired with a walk-in clinic and pharmacy—bringing essential services together in one place for added convenience, especially when patients need it most.

This 14,694 SF facility has made a lasting, positive impact in Wayne County and continues to provide high-quality care to the region.

Projects like this remind us why we love what we do—seeing the positive impact on the people and communities we serve.

Friday marked the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Adair County Middle School!

It was wonderful to experience the excitement and pride throughout Friday’s celebration. After all the planning, design, and hard work that goes into a project of this magnitude, there’s something especially rewarding about knowing it will make a lasting impact on the community.

Congratulations to Adair County Schools and the entire Columbia community!

Yesterday, two members of our team, Jessica Phillips and Telene Hancock, had the opportunity to attend the 50th Annual Governor’s Local Issues Conference in Louisville.

The day covered a wide range of topics, from state and federal grant programs to area and economic development. Lunch featured a keynote address from Governor Andy Beshear, and the day wrapped up at the Kentucky Derby Museum with the Commissioner’s Reception, which Deco was proud to co-sponsor.

For Jessica, the evening carried a little extra meaning. During her remarks, she shared that the Kentucky Derby and horses truly “run” in her blood. Her grandfather was a master farrier in Kentucky and had the incredible honor of shoeing Canonero II the day before he won the 1971 Kentucky Derby. Two weeks later, Canonero II went on to win the Preakness Stakes—wearing that same pair of shoes!

At Deco Architects, part of our vision is the belief that we are all lifelong learners. The information and relationships gained through opportunities like this help us remain proactive, knowledgeable, and hospitable guides to the partners and communities we serve across Kentucky and beyond.

Rockcastle County Schools is moving right along with construction on their NEW middle school!

If you’ve been through the area lately, you’ve probably noticed all the construction happening. This project is truly innovative, especially in the way it preserves the original gymnasium—a sentimental and memorable landmark for the Rockcastle County community.

The school was designed to be demolished and reconstructed in phases, allowing students to continue using the existing building while the new facility was constructed around the original gym. That kind of phasing takes a lot of planning, but it allowed the district to preserve an important piece of its history while moving forward with a brand-new middle school.

The site also presented a unique challenge when it came to traffic. The final design includes a tunnel that vehicles and buses can travel through as they circulate through campus. Students, teachers, and staff will even be able to see the buses and cars pass beneath the school from the hallway above the tunnel!

Another important focus of the design was natural light. We’re proud to say that every classroom has a window! This was made possible, in part, by incorporating a green space at the center of the school, which is easily accessible from high-traffic areas. Students will have a safe outdoor space to eat lunch in the outdoor seating area, to gather for guest speakers and demonstrations, and experience a learning environment that extends beyond the walls of the building.

And we can’t forget about the football field! This beautiful turf field opened last fall and features a concession building and renovated locker rooms between the existing gym and new auxiliary gym. The concrete bleachers are built into the natural slope of the site, creating a durable seating area designed to last.

We’re excited to watch this project continue to take shape and, even more, to see it enjoyed by students, teachers, staff, and community members for years to come. Props to Rockcastle County for the forward thinking that makes big things happen! We're proud to be a part of your team.

Throwback Thursday — Ferguson City Hall

It’s pretty cool to look back on both the new Ferguson City Hall and the old Ferguson City Hall. It’s a little reminder of how far a community can come when local leaders stay committed to making things better.

One of the unique aspects of the design was that it didn’t just provide a new home for City Hall. The building also included adjoining suites that could be leased to businesses, creating a source of passive income for the city to help offset construction costs.

We love seeing our projects do more than just create structure, but to also positively impact the communities they serve.

Looking back at the journey from the old facility to the upgraded City Hall, it’s rewarding to see the difference. Congratulations to the City of Ferguson, Kentucky.

The renovation of the Wayne County Senior Citizen Center is another exciting investment in the Monticello-Wayne County community.

The design features a refreshed exterior façade and bright, welcoming interiors. Inside, the renovated facility includes an inviting check-in area, a large gathering space, restrooms, laundry facilities, a full kitchen, flexible activity space, and offices—all designed to better serve both visitors and staff.

One of the most rewarding parts of our work is seeing how thoughtful design can improve everyday life, and it's especially meaningful when those projects are right at home.

Thank you to Judge-Executive Scott Gehring for the opportunity to serve Wayne County. We love Monticello and are grateful to play a small part in investing in our community!

Throwback Thursday—How wonderful it is to see a cherished piece of a community brought back to life.

When the City of Somerset asked us to design the plans for the renovation of The Virginia, the building had fallen into significant disrepair. With large portions of the roof missing, years of exposure to the elements had taken a heavy toll on the interior.

As we approached the design, our goal was to create a thoughtful contrast between old and new—pairing clean, modern elements with the building's historic character. Rather than erase its past, we wanted to celebrate it.

The result is a space that honors The Virginia's history while giving it new life for future generations to enjoy. We continue to be grateful to have played a small part in preserving such an important piece of Somerset's story.
