🚀 Happy Friday, and happy World Space Week! Did you know iron-air batteries have space-age roots? Iron-air was first explored with support from NASA in the 1960s!

Early research into iron-air was backed by NASA, Westinghouse, the Swedish National Lab, and other global institutions. Over the decades, different applications for the technology were explored. As demand for clean, firm power surged, it became clear that iron-air could have significant potential for energy storage on the electric grid.

Today, we’re commercializing iron-air batteries with multi-day energy storage systems capable of cleanly and affordably delivering power for 100 hours – designed to transform how we power modern electric grids.

🪐 And one last fun fact for this Friday: iron is one of the most abundant metals in the universe!

It was a pleasure to host U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and U.S. Senator Susan Collins last month at the proposed site of our 85 MW / 8,500 MWh multi-day energy storage project in Lincoln, Maine.

The project is part of Power Up New England – a partnership across the six New England states, major utilities, Form Energy, and the U.S. Department of Energy. The goal: a more resilient, reliable grid – and lower electricity costs for New England families and businesses.

Using iron-air batteries made in America at Form Factory 1 in West Virginia, the system is expected to store enough energy to reliably power around 65,000 Maine households, reducing the need for costly transmission upgrades and easing strain during the highest-cost hours on the grid.

We're proud to be building this in Lincoln, and proud to be doing it with the U.S. Department of Energy, the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, the Maine Department of Energy Resources, and the Town of Lincoln, Maine as our key partners.

Thank you, Secretary Chris Wright and U.S. Senator Susan Collins, for the visit, and to all our partners for your continued support for this project.
