On May 13, 2026, the Schafer Gear Works Robotics Lab at Penn High School was officially unveiled, marking an exciting new partnership focused on supporting students, hands-on learning, and the next generation of skilled talent.

We’re proud to partner with Penn High School’s students and staff to help inspire curiosity, creativity, and real-world problem solving through robotics and technology. We can’t wait to see what these students create next.

Before Schafer Gear Works was powering precision manufacturing, we were helping power the track at the legendary Indianapolis 500 🏁🏎️

Back in 1948, a Schafer-sponsored race car driven by Mel Hansen took on one of the biggest stages in motorsports, finishing 25th at the Indy 500 and bringing home $1,420 in winnings.

From the racetrack to today’s production floor, precision, performance, and innovation have always been part of the Schafer story. Nearly 80 years later, that drive to push forward is still in our gears. ⚙️

A legacy built over 60+ years ✈️

What started with gears for radio communication equipment evolved into supporting avionics, cockpit sensors, and readout gauges across various aircraft.

In the 1990s, the addition of precision machining expanded capabilities into motion control and power systems. By 2016, bringing those operations into South Bend as Schafer Aerospace Products helped streamline growth and support more complex electromechanical components used in flight control systems for commercial and regional aircraft.

Today, that work extends even further supporting aftermarket engine starters, military applications, and components used in cargo systems, gearboxes, drones, and helicopter flight controls. A steady progression driven by precision, adaptability, and real-world application.

Meet Darren Raike

Since joining the Fredericktown team in May 2024, Darren has made an immediate impact. Trained across multiple complex assembly operations, he continues to seek out new skills while delivering consistent, high-quality work. His attention to detail recently helped catch a mid-run barcode serial number error preventing potential rework and protecting the customer experience.

What stands out most to Darren is the people. He takes pride in the family-like culture within Assembly, where teammates support one another and work together to ensure everyone feels safe and set up for success. That same support helped him grow into his role, with mentorship from team members who built his confidence early on.

He’s also embraced new challenges, including assisting with FP9 repairs finding real satisfaction in diagnosing issues and turning failed units into functioning ones.

Darren’s advice to new team members: be patient, focus on learning, and never compromise on quality.

For him, Accountability to Others is more than a core value it’s a daily commitment to doing the job right and supporting the team every step of the way.
